A German soldier letter dated December 30 reports the Dresden arsenal blast killed about one thousand women and girls. The writer said the blast shattered windows twelve miles out and that authorities are keeping the news secret. No Dresden railroad tickets issued except for urgent needs.
Philadelphia January 27 Harry K Thaw remains in a hospital bed slowly recovering from self inflicted wounds. Dr John Wanamaker third and Thaws private physician Dr Elwood Kirby observe him. Wanamaker says Thaws mind remains cloudy and blood loss from slashing his throat and wrist contributes to the haze. Detectives guard his bedside awaiting arrest on a bench warrant for kidnapping and assault on Frederick Gump Jr a 19 year old Kansas City high school boy.
Post office inspector Leon A. Mott returned from Blackfoot after tracing a tampering spree to an 11 year old. The youth was caught opening the Utah Idaho Sugar company letter box and is now in juvenile custody under local authorities. A watch by federal inspectors helped capture the offender.
Philadelphia January 27. President William F Baker of the Philadelphia National League club released a letter to Grover Alexander denying a three year 15000 a year contract. Baker said 8000 a year offer stands and would not rise. Alexander is at his St Paul Nebraska home. Catcher Killifer reportedly offered a contract 2000 less than last year. Baker will meet the star battery next month.
New York reports prison authorities used forcible feeding on Mrs. Byrnes after she collapsed during a hunger strike in a Blackwell's Island cell. She is serving a thirty day sentence. A tube delivered nourishing liquid to her as doctors noted she could not resist. Authorities said the involuntary method would continue unless she abandoned the hunger strike.
Washington January 27 Protesters demand changes as Perbert Hoover and Dr Penn de ta plan to confer with the president over deportations. The meeting signals rising political pressure on immigration policy.
After April 1, Common Laborers Local Union 322 will raise wages to 3.50 per day and 0.43 per hour for an eight hour day with overtime at time and a half from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. The increase aims to offset rising living costs. The union, one of the state’s best organized, is printing its by laws and constitution. Notice signed by D. W. King, president, and C. W. Hawes, financial secretary.
Cheyenne reports Union Pacific crews cleared the line for eastbound trains after a heavy snow, but a fresh blizzard again closed the route, delaying westbound trains. About twenty passengers remain stranded, two days late, with Wilcox as the blocked point.
In Laramie on January 27 a thousand miners from the Union Pacific Coal company mines at Hanna were ordered to shovel snow to relieve a blockade.
The United States marks a Week of Mercy to aid Jewish suffering in Europe. The observance begins on the first anniversary of President Wilson's relief proclamation with exhortation and prayer across thousands of synagogues. Public meetings start tomorrow in major cities, followed by a week focused on relief fund collections.
Reports from Soda Springs announce a $10,000 opera house planned with open public access by July. Promoter EB Wood has purchased adjoining property for the site and the strictly modern building will include rest rooms for ladies smoking rooms check rooms and a second floor hall for dancing with a banquet hall. Construction is to begin immediately and be rushed to completion this summer.
Washington reports a new administration revenue bill backed by a caucus of house Democrats aims to raise about a quarter billion dollars for preparedness and other expenses. The measure is ready for presentation to the house and is expected early next week.
Washington on January 27 senators expect a conference over a bill section making all postmasters non political and placing them on civil service. The provision passed the senate amid objections that it is not germane.
Chicago January conference of publishers and paper manufacturers warned that two cent papers likely mark a new norm. The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled Utah and Idaho flour and wheat freight rates to California and Nevada too high. Railroads must set new rates by April 16 not exceeding five cents per hundredweight above the present levels.
Washington January 27. Bernard Baker of Baltimore resigns from the federal shipping board. Secretary McAdoo says the move follows a suggestion that the chairmanship should go to the Pacific coast in the current circumstances.
The copper market remained firm in the past week with electrolytic copper for second quarter delivery listed from 29.50 to 32.50. Major agencies continue to quote 32.50 for third quarter supplies.
New York January 27. Dr Arthur Warren Waite the confessed murderer appeals to the New York Court of Appeals at Albany Monday arguing insanity. Waite has lived in Sing Sing death house since June 1 after being convicted of poisoning John E B Peck and attempted to murder Miss Katherine Peck and his wife s wealthy relatives. He has remained cheerful claiming two selves a soul self and a man self and this behavior along with testimony from his family is urged as proof of insanity.
New York reports Thomas W. Son, notable in the Washington investigation, said in Boston he intends soon to visit Oregon for a vacation. The congressional leak committee begins obtaining records of stock brokers' transactions, with assurances no further changes to its demands are expected.
Secretary Daniels and the mayor of San Diego opened the government’s most powerful radio station at San Diego marking a permanent continental wireless link. The station’s power exceeds Arlington by two and a half times as Navy builds five high powered stations for nationwide direct radio from Washington to American territories including Hawaii Alaska and the Philippines.
Next Monday the City Federation of clubs will hold an important regular session at the public library at 3 o clock. Vice president Mrs Iona Hart asks all members and interested parties to attend and send representatives as affairs of importance will be discussed.
Berlin reports Emper or William II marks his fifty eighth birthday with customary observances. He has reigned twenty eight years and a half. Leaders from German states and Austro Hungary Bulgaria and Turkey sent congratulations. Thanksgiving services were held in the castle chapel.
A large party of National Association of Real Estate Boards members sailed from New York for a twenty four day West Indies cruise. Many members traveled with their families and represent numerous sections of the country aboard a specially chartered steamship.
Admiral Dewey's will dated December 17 1916 was filed for probate. It bequeaths a $500 yearly life annuity to his sister Mrs Mary P Greeley and orders a grave stone at Arlington National Cemetery. The remainder of the estate goes to his widow and son George Dewey Jr who are named executors without bond.
President Wilson rejects the railroad brotherhoods proposal for a joint commission to investigate disputes without modification. He favors government led inquiry into strikes and lockouts, and Representative Adamson notes the need for public representation on any commission.
Prices for potatoes run two dollars and fifty cents a hundred as a short supply and transport problems push costs. Meanwhile five miles south of Ruby Arizona Mexican and American forces exchange fire near Sasabe with no reported U.S. casualties and reinforcements moving in from Nogales.
Sunnyland Elks announce rehearsals for A Night in a Cabaret to run next Monday Tuesday and Wednesday with a strong local cast. The event features a witty program The Elks 42-Centimeter and plans for a larger Idaho Falls showing with enthusiastic attendance from Pocatello lodge members.
Salt Lake Jan 27 The commerce and industry committee of the senate faces a decision on the Young state wide prohibition bill. Proponents of a commissioner of prohibition must persuade a majority that a commissioner would aid enforcement. otherwise the bill will be reported unfavorably.
The Current Event club of the Y M C A held a session with W H Snyder presiding. Marie Holmes gave a patriotic reading and R H Palmer lectured on birds, illustrating evolution and species from the yellow warbler to pelican. A stuffed pelican display loaned by Watson was shown.
Fire swept a Pittsburgh retail district destroying a department store and opera house along with a dozen smaller buildings. Loss estimated at three to four million dollars. Four firefighters were seriously injured and more suffered injuries as crews battled the blaze, hampered by thawing hydrants and hot water from nearby restaurants.
A small body of Mexican troops departed Nogales Sonora reportedly toward the troubled area. F Troop of the First Utah cavalry with sixty men moves from Nogales to reinforce Utah cavalry at Ruby.
American troops were marching out of Colonial Dublan toward the border at seven o'clock, a Casas Grandes message said. The extent of the movement was not stated, but Casas Grandes predicted the entire expeditionary force would be on the road northward today.
Not Reached Border Deming January 27 confirmation from Columbus states troops are withdrawn from Colonia Dublan. No troops have yet reached the border except ill soldiers transported by motor trucks.
By Monday the water department will have five thawing apparatus at work on frozen city mains. Four machines are already operating, two electrical devices and two steam controlled. An extra unit arriving from Ogden will be operated by an expert and used on obstruction like the Garfield main where steam thawing and surface piping are employed to clear frost and resume normal water service.
O D Van Buskirk sales manager for Pocatello Heights says work will start on a new dugway to the residence location as weather permits. The plan includes a thirty foot drive 2000 feet long with four foot cement walks an 18 inch curb and eight foot parking. Interest grows in the project especially the proposed clubhouse a bungalow style structure planned with amenities for club community enjoyment.
Chicago wheat futures closed on January 27 with May wheat up 1.75 percent, corn up 1.00 percent, and oats up 0.66 percent amid quiet trading and position adjustments.
