Maurice Lampe, a French inmate, describes brutal executions of 50 Russian officers and commissars and 47 Allied fliers at Mauthausen in September 1944. He recalls stone quarry deaths, beatings, and mass cremations as he watched Russian prisoners kiss goodbye before execution in the death house.
The A-bomb versus modern warships test would cost near half a billion dollars with navy figures showing 230 million for hulls and engines of 47 U S combat units, over 100 million for transports, and unofficial operating costs around 1 090 000 000. Captain William D. Daily of the Army Engineers arrived home Sunday from Japan where he served with the occupation forces since September. He is married to Dolly Hudson Daily and they live at 122 Rosewood Avenue, Pocatello with their three year old son Billy and baby daughter Drinda Ann born January 11. Daily entered active duty June 9 1941 after graduating from Montana State College. He spent three years in Texas on the Army Construction Program and served in Manila and later in the Sixth Army in the Kure Hiroshima area. He is on terminal leave until May 11.
In Chicago an unnamed railway labor official said 18 brotherhoods and the major carriers would agree to a day for wage demand arbitration. Rule changes will be postponed. signing will involve carrier representatives and 3 operating plus 14 non operating railroad brotherhoods. In Manila, a body reburied in a cemetery was tentatively identified as Capt Colin Kelly, noted as America's first widely publicized World War I air hero.
Elliott C. Beardsley a Monroe farmer testified in superior court about a William Tell style stunt with a rifle on his wife’s head while defending a divorce suit alleging intolerable cruelty and habitual intemperance. He said they were drinking then and that he allowed her to shoot the can from the top of his head. The couple married in 1928, separated four years ago, and have five children. Judge James E. Murphy reserved his decision.
Idaho AG Frank Langley says federal retail liquor stamp holders may apply for beer permits only after destroying canceling or surrendering the stamps. Licenses may be issued once stamps are disposed of and authorities should revoke licenses for holders who obtained them with stamps still valid.
Horace Fereday announced five additional donation sites in Pocatello to speed up the Victory Clothing Campaign. The new depots join four existing centers at the Post Office, City Office, Jesse M. Chase Motor Company, and Harlan Plumbing, with December 31 closing the drive.

Ogden records its first 1946 traffic death with 13 year old Joseph M. Hilton Jr. the son of Mr and Mrs Hilton. He died from injuries including a skull fracture broken leg and fractured fingers after colliding with a car while sleigh riding Wednesday night.
The Aviation Engineering and Development Corporation of Pocatello filed articles of incorporation listing capital stock of 60 000. The incorporators are Rudolph G. Nelson Hedvig B. Nelson Maynard T. Craig and Harold H. Helm, all Pocatellans.
A coroner's jury exonerated C. L. Reynolds of Salt Lake City in the death of Fred K. Schlepp of Weiser Idaho after finding Schlepp's car blew a tire and struck Reynolds' vehicle near Tipton. Seven people were injured in the crash last week.

A 12 year old boy was killed, two injured, prompting a hurried departure from Jujuy City. Col. Juan Peron faced internal party strife and trouble recruiting 378 electors and a full congressional slate.

Orval W. Adams of Salt Lake City former president of the American Bankers Association warned at the Colorado Mining Association convention that every strike and wage gain pushes inflation higher. Russia France and the Netherlands joined the international tribunal for Japan war crime trials. AFL President William Green announced the reaffiliation of John L. Lewis and his United Mine Workers with the AFL. Lewis was elected to the vacancy on the AFL council created by Harvey W. Brown's withdrawal and will attend next week's council sessions. Green called the move significant for unity within the labor movement and an effort to reestablish order in the house of labor. Lewis had left AFL in 1936 to form the CIO and later joined UMW after brief CIO affiliation.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen begins mailing strike ballots to 950 lodges affecting 215000 members. If approved, a national walkout could be called within three days after results. Ballots return to Cleveland for counting. Key issue is a 25 percent wage increase and rule changes for better working conditions.
Helen I. Mollendorf of Washington filed in federal court alleging false and malicious prosecution and illegal imprisonment at the Benewah county jail in St. Maries from October 29 to November 16, 1945.
