Dispatches report Constantinople nearly under siege as the Young Turks arrest opponents and search premises. European powers send warships to reinforce guard while Italy rushes two cruisers and gunboats with five hundred marines to Constantinople amid fears of a return to power.
Washington reports Ambassador to Constantinople says the Turkish government moved quickly after Nazim Pasha's killing. He notes assurances to protect persons and property. A slight earthquake shake was felt in Constantinople this morning.
President Taft rejects clemency for Andrew Gonzales, condemned for first degree murder after killing his wife. Gonzales claims insanity and says he acted to save the world as Jesus Christ. Officials consider his mental state at arrest and now.
The Charleston Fair and Rating association launched a 55 day meet at Palmetto Park with nearly 800 thoroughbreds quartered and more stable space sought daily. Key event is the Palmetto Derby on the closing day, with 19 horses totaling about 000 in value. Officials include presiding judge W F Lehuste and racing secretary Francis J Pons, among others. stewards are W B Burch H Pettingill and J B Campbell.
Washington Jan 25 Way and Means Committee heard testimony on flax hemp and jute tariffs. Witnesses came from New York Ohio Boston and Philadelphia among others. With the hearing winding up the committee will tackle the wool schedule on Monday.
Brady clinches the nomination on the first ballot with 43 votes, three more than needed, ending the long Boise deadlock. North sources credit the decisive break and party pressure for the resolution.
The House approved a bill to incorporate the Rockefeller Foundation with a 100 million philanthropic fund donated by John D. Rockefeller. Incorporators include John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Frederick T. Gates among others, with aims to advance knowledge, relieve suffering, and promote human progress abroad and in U S territories. The measure moves to the Senate and restricts adding to the capital or forcing expenditure of income.
In New York on January 25 a detail of five hundred extra police was deployed through the hotel district to curb rioting by striking waiters. Special officers assist the force and the sheriff will swear in deputies as needed. The Hotel Men's association abandoned plans to call on the governor for national guard. About four thousand waiters and kitchen workers are out, with hotels crippled and non union help being hired. Strikers demand higher pay better food and abolition of fines.
In Boise on January 25, James H Brady of Pocatello won the United States Senate seat to fill the late Senator Sheldon Bayow’s term. The vote reached 43 for Brady to 7 for Airshie on the thirty‑first ballot after a long, costly contest. Leaders of the Republican forces moved to end the deadlock, rallying support from Sen. Hart and Rep. Johnston among others, with many county officials backing Brady to begin work promptly.
Cheyenne Wy Jan 25 The West Virginia House met to hear charges against Representative Manson. The committee found no charges against him and the body seated Fisher, a Republican contestee, after a contest vote.
In Boise on January 24 Idaho legislators erupted after Representative A S Dickinson attacked Senator Brady accusing him of a last night deal. The chamber roared as Dickinson faulted Brady and named William C Courtney the janitor as a protest vote. The presiding officer credited Courtney with one vote the first such instance in Idaho history.
In Cheyenne on January 25 the house committee on privileges and elections faced a split vote over seating three Republicans and one Democrat as balloting for U S senator loomed. The minority report favored Warren's re election while La Follette's challenge carried no clear impact. Manson faces charges of securing 900 from a West Virginia school fund under the alias F E Roberts.
Rochester January 25. Unless there is a change in the garment strike situation before Monday, the works will be shut down and twelve thousand workers will be thrown out of employment. Manufacturers threaten to close all factories unless the strikers return immediately. The strikers demand union recognition.
A trolley passenger train collided with a freight in Lockport Kentucky on January 25 killing one man and injuring twenty, all Eagles members returning from a Buffalo banquet.
In Los Angeles on January 25 Carl Ridelbach showed no concern for his fate during closing arguments of his second trial. He ignored the proceedings, yet took keen interest in medals of bravery awarded to detectives who subdued him and destroyed the bomb, as he had previously threatened to blow up the central police station.
Salt Lake City January 25. Senator Rideout will introduce an employers liability bill in the Utah senate Monday. The measure creates an industrial accident board of three members appointed by the governor. Employers choosing compensation under the board are shielded from civil damages actions, as the board sets damages. Employers may join the board or stay under court liability.
Jean Bielovucci from Peru flew a monoplane from Brig to Demodossola in under sixty minutes crossing the Swiss Alps during a bold flight.
New York January 26 detectives raided uptown apartment houses uncovering alleged gambling among women at poker. A group of about a score was arrested in evening dress, including a handsome woman identified as Mrs. Alice Merrill, with warrants charging her with maintaining a gambling house. Detectives seized two poker tables during the operation.
Beulah Levee on the east side of the Mississippi near Greenville broke, flooding a six by fifteen mile area with crevasses from foundation settling. About 1500 men worked day and night last week to rebuild the levee, with efforts focused on saving levees at Fitters and Lake Jefferson as the flood waters threaten crops and land. No loss of life is reported.
At Modogar in Morocco a French expeditionary column repelled a Moorish assault with heavy losses on both sides. French casualties numbered eighteen killed and forty one wounded while Moors suffered significant killed and wounded before the attackers were routed.
London suffragists flood the city with fresh recruits from Scotland and the provinces for special duty. The mobilization signals a possible threat of military action if the expected vote on enfranchisement foils their efforts.
Chairman Adamson of the house committee predicts that one of Me Wilsons first requests will be for a repeal passage provision in the Panama canal act. He says England may complain that subsidies to be allowed to American ships must be equal to all nations under the treaty.
