Washington January 24 Representative Martin of South Dakota introduces a bill to amend the reclamation law governing water right payments. It allows extending terms beyond ten years when water costs exceed $20 per acre, with annual payments not above $2 per acre. For $30 an acre, fifteen years instead of ten may be needed.

Madison Jan 24 The Wisconsin legislature and caucus results show Governor Robert M La Follette chosen as United States senator to succeed Joseph V Quarles. La Follette led with 65 of 107 on the informal ballot and later a majority in the separate house vote.
Jefferson City January 24 The fifth ballot for United States senator to succeed Francis M Cockrell produced no shift Niedringhaus 0 Cockrell 79 Kerens 9 Pettijohn 1 Major William Warner arrived noting he is not a candidate now Republican state committee urged support for Thomas Niedringhaus caucus nominee Pettijohn offered speakership for Kerens backers. Pettijohn declined.
