The Enoshima Maru carrying 4296 Japanese sank after hitting a mine off the Yangtze mouth. The Brevard rescued about 99 percent of survivors in 25 minutes transferring nearly all aboard. Lt. John L. Elliott of San Diego led the operation with cooperation from frightened yet orderly Japanese.
Secret talks in Byrnes's office stall on a UN secretary general choice as the five powers drift toward deadlock over the post. US backs Lester Pearson of Canada while Russia backs Trygve Lie of Norway, complicating progress toward forming a permanent staff.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics records 1,622,000 idle workers in strikes nationwide. In 1919 a total 4,160,348 were idle in 3,630 strikes, with 1,388,000 idle in four major stoppages now in steel, electrical appliances, meat, and General Motors. CIO holds 1,318,000 idle. AFL 70,000.
Police search for a mother who walked out of a Butte hotel room leaving two children, Jerry about 2 and a girl about 11 months old. The infants appeared fed and cared for and cried for their mother as hospital nurses observed. Jerry spoke the name as officers took custody Sunday night after hotel management raised the alarm.
The British military government orders Berlin’s Tiergarten converted into a vast potato patch. The central park lies within the British occupation zone and its ancient oaks have been cut to create the crop field.
J C Newman 41 conservation officer from Dubois sustained minor bruises when a snowmobile with skis and rear aircraft propeller plunged into a 30 foot lava crevasse southwest of Dubois. The craft was removed for repair and used for game counts patrols and hauling gear in eastern Idaho.
William B. Wright, newly elected president of the American National Livestock association, telegraphed President Truman to oppose government seizure of packing plants as a solution to the strike. He called it a retreat from collective bargaining and said it would shift costs to livestock producers and consumers.
Idaho Falls Idaho reported a January 1 1946 potato stock of 19 5 million bushels up nearly 5 million from 1945 and above two years ago 18 5 million. Leroy W Gay of the Production and Marketing Administration notes national on hand total at 29 78 million bushels with 29 8 in 1945 and 35 2 in 1944. Regional totals are given for Oregon Washington Utah Wyoming and others.
Water content in the Jackson lake watershed this week is above last year and above normal. District Watermaster Lynn Crandall says supplies should be sufficient next summer though Snake River reservoirs have not filled. Jackson Lake holds 664 630 acre feet, Island Park 109 500, American Falls 1 183 790 versus prior year figures.
Richard Lane a 21 year old war veteran driver of a daily delivery truck was fatally injured when a Union Pacific locomotive struck his vehicle at Clarence Erickson the engineer reported Lane saw the engine and tried to stop but the truck skidded into the train path.
Maj. Gen. Walter Short testifies two days before Pearl Harbor that Gen. Sherman Miles sent a Panama message noting strained U S Japan relations and possible severance of diplomatic ties. He notes Kroner Betts lacked intercepted messages affecting wartime estimates. Short says he expected Washington to either order an alert or provide enough information to do so.
President Truman praised Commander Joseph T. OCallahan of Cambridge Mass for earning the congressional Medal of Honor as the first chaplain to receive the nation’s highest military award while serving aboard the aircraft carrier Franklin after it was hit by Japanese bombs.
Ricardo Carbajal testified in a federal court that $10,000 worth of clothing meant for the needy was delivered to Col. Juan Peron's residence. He asked the court to search Peron's home and prosecute officials he claimed were misusing public funds.
Ten workers are laid off at the Simplot Fertilizer plant in Pocatello due to reduced supply of sulfuric acid from Garfield caused by the CIO strike. Plant manager O A Power said acid on hand will last two days and up to six to eight more workers may be laid off tonight, with 65 total employees affected in the coming days if a new acid source isn’t found. Before the strike the plant received 100 tons of acid daily from Garfield.
General MacArthur ordered the arrest of 48 more Japanese war crime suspects including three lieutenant generals. Lt. Gen Yuichiro Nagano, Lt. Gen Fusataro Teshima, and Lt. Gen Seichi Yamada were to report at Sugamo prison. The group also lists lower ranking officers, civilian courtiers, POW guards, and naval personnel. Kyodo reports parliamentary vice ministers resigned to clear the way for elections.
Washington reports a drive to rewrite Truman era fact finding into broad strike control. Republicans and southern Democrats aim to attach amendments, seeking wide floor debate. key items include equal contract liability for unions and companies and limits on strikes and unionization of supervisors.

A 750,000 CIO steelworkers strike enters day three with no government seizure plans. Truman appoints an emergency rail board to avert a Chicago area rail shutdown, while 215,000 trainmen prepare strike votes and locomotive engineers hold meetings. Auto workers push for wage gains as negotiations resume and UAW urges halted GM material work for 3,500–4,000 Detroit area workers. Eight-day CIO Electrical Workers mediation resumes over a 200,000 stoppage against GE, Westinghouse and GM.
Allied headquarters report the surrender of Yosuke Matsuoka former Japanese foreign minister linked to the axis alliance. Matsuoka, who has been ill, is held at Sugamo prison awaiting trial on war crimes charges.
Frank G. Gorrie, chief of bureau in Seattle for the Associated Press, is appointed divisional news editor in Kansas City and will report to his new post February 1, announced Executive Director Kent Cooper.
The three allies Britain Russia and the United States divide operable surface units of the Nazi Navy totaling 1759 ships plus 30 submarines on shore and sea. The split leaves Germany without a combat fleet and allocates ships to each power including the Prinz Eugen to the United States and the Nuernberg to Russia.
Washington reports a California based government led project develops a citrus peel pectin jelly to reduce sugar in cream centers for chocolate candies. The modified jelly tastes and feels like premium centers while using half as much sugar, aiding sugar shortages and calorie conscious consumers.
Fire reoccurs at the 2,800 foot level of Sunshine Mining. Water is pumped into the section to control the blaze as bulkheads were opened to allow entry into the earlier fire area. Superintendent R F Mahoney reported today.

Police report a 38 year old Reno man and ex convict in custody after a voluntary confession to the month old burglary of the C C Anderson company store in Twin Falls. He is also under questioning in a Kimber ly crime spree including a liquor store burglary and an assault on city marshal Seth Jacobs with a whiskey bottle.

Two youths in a Buhl car were injured and a third escaped unhurt when the Union Pacific Galloping Goose struck the vehicle at a grade crossing at noon. Darrell Wilhite and Fred Smalley suffered minor cuts and bruises, Walter Teagarden escaped injury. The driver said the car skidded on ice, braking failed to stop the train, the Goose carried the car 61 feet and threw it 16 feet off the rails.
Denver police questioned a 37 year old woman in the fatal stabbing of John Thomas Levi 49 an Indian star of the Haskell Institute 1923 football team Detective Captain James E Childers identified Levi as the long passing star who once played under Coach Dick Hanley and held the record for the longest completed forward pass in gridiron history with a 63 yard toss
In Albuquerque, New Mexico a baby girl weighing six pounds was born to a mother reportedly age 1214 years. Dr J W said both mother and child are doing well.
The government plans seizure and operation of more than 100 closed meat packing plants starting Saturday January 25 with the department of agriculture and army ready to assist. Railroad trainmen vote immediately on strike action while locomotive engineers consider a similar vote on February 1. White House spokesman Charles G. Ross announced the move at a brief news conference.
The OPA announced price ceilings will be suspended indefinitely for most games and many toys starting January 28. Wheel goods such as wagons over 18 inches and riding toys remain restricted. Other ceilings removed include sweet potatoes cabbage lettuce and frozen seafood with demand at post holiday low.
Dr Edith Summerskill told the House of Commons that Scotch whisky will remain scarce for at least one more year. She noted that distillers will receive 130000 tons of grain this year, unchanged from 1945, enough to produce a little over 40 percent of prewar whisky output.
