The Senate approved 24 million dollars to back prohibition enforcement with the president directing spending. An additional 2500000 was available for liquor law investigation, amid wets drys clashes and intra party tensions. The measure carries end date June 30, 1930.
The Mel grand jury investigation into gang orders bootlegging and police corruption continues as District Attorney Monaghan announces more than fifty officers suspended for unexplained wealth. The presentment seeks dismissal of two additional defectives and three Unit No 1 patrolmen amid effort to purge underworld ties. Frank Preund head of an automobile squad reportedly cannot account for about 630000 in wealth.
Associates of John D. Rockefeller Jr. seek enough proxies to remove Col. Robert M. Stewart from the Standard 611 chairmanship of Indiana. They claim 45 percent of the stock will be represented at the March 7 meeting in Whiting and vow that dividends will not be jeopardized by voting out Stewart. Thomas Debevoise released letters to stockholders asserting the current liberal dividend policy would continue. The Denver Post notes E G Seubert, company president and Stewart critic, has discussed support from Mid-West Refining for backing Midwest holders.
In Baltimore Fred Sweiger of Denver fatally wounds his nephew Thomas W Cole and then kills himself in Cole's office at a local printing company. Cole, the manager, dies later at a hospital. A coworker, Sweiger’s brother, gave police details of the sequence. In Washington the same day seven teen House members, including leaders, dined with President Coolidge at a White House breakfast.
Jan 23 AP report details Crittenden and Doolittle clashing with a slot machine at a roadhouse in Illinois. Crittenden moved it to the Illinois house while Doolittle aimed to enforce the law, then both sheriffs returned to the roadhouse as a cold wave with possible snow brews over the region.
Mrs Virginia Mowbray Whitney of Brooklyn NY has filed for divorce in Reno from Arthur Whitney a paper company executive and former army aviator. Their troubles trace to 1925 when they separated over alleged cruelty. Whitney allegedly called the fourteen articles for marital bliss a surrender terms.
James A. Hollomon 65 associate editor of the Atlanta Constitution was in critical condition after a two story fall from a stairway in the Henry Grady hotel. He suffered jaw hip and knee injuries as he left a conference when vertigo struck at the stairway.
The U S transport Henderson arrived from Tientsin with 900 American marines aboard marking the withdrawal of the last U S Marines from north China.
Washington dated report notes Secretary Mellon opposes Senator McKellar's amendment to the first deficiency bill. The measure would place settlement of tax funds over 10,000 with the board of tax appeals rather than the IRS commissioner. Mellon argues the change would burden the board and reduce executive control over tax refunds seen as a broad leakage of funds.

In Bellevue Ohio January 23 a Lake Shore interurban car struck a Greyhound bus at a crossing killing Richard Freeman of Cleveland. Driver Edward Butler and motorman Fred Schuyler gave differing accounts while investigations begin. Snow blanketed the area as the 50 ton car traveled 30 to 50 mph, pinning passengers beneath wreckage.
Two Birmingham men, Jack Frown and Edgar Harris, confessed to authorities late Friday night to killing J. R. Moss, 77, postmaster of Linden, Alabama. Moss’s mutilated body was found Saturday morning at the post office when a patron reported a disturbance and the stove was found rifled.
The Radio Marine corporation reported that the Italian freighter Florida and the American tanker Dan nedaike were in distress about 50 miles east of the Virginia capes. Three rescue ships had not yet reached them.
A Kentucky father Aylet? Towing, 81, surrendered to officials after attacking his two daughters with a hammer. Virginia Frances, 12, and Jane, 10, were wounded. Virginia died at hospital and Jane died the following morning. The motive cited was inability to bear their suffering.
Boise January 23 AP The Idaho House defeated a bill to raise legislator pay to 65 a day plus 65 per day for expenses after a vigorous debate and a partisan bloc vote from the north district. Representative Crowley defended the measure and constitutional concerns, but the bill failed.
West Pacific passenger train No 4 en route from San Francisco to Salt Lake City struck by freight train at Wells Siding fifty miles east of here. Five derailed cars. Engineer D D Cook injured. Collision amid heavy snowstorm. Passengers rerouted to Beetroot and Nevada. four hours to clear tracks. about one hour delay.
Elvin B. Grainger 26 and Glenn Abbott 29, Belvedere Calif., held in Los Angeles on 29 counts of robbery after New Year’s Day arrests. Grainger, heir to an estate, faces a trust arrangement until age 30 with monthly income around 400 to 460 dollars.

Ossining N Y January 23 Prank Hawkes long term prisoner who escaped from Sing Sing last night with two others was recaptured today at Phillips Manor two and a half miles from the prison. George Price 25 of New York serving 20 years to life for murder is at large. Roger Evans 22 of New York under ten year sentence for robbery was captured last night. Hawker 30 of Brooklyn serving 30 to 60 years for robbery was wounded in the wrist as guards fired while the trio escaped. A posse of 100 guards hunted the area around the prison.
Washington inquiry into tariff revisions heard from thirty three witnesses as manufacturers urged lowering import duties on Sumatra wrappers from 210 to 150 pounds. Marvey L. Hires of Philadelphia for Bayuk Cigars argued a five cent cigar requires cheaper wrappers and warned domestic wrappers are unavailable.
