Salt Lake City AP news recounts Fred Hoyt dying after bailing from a stricken plane in Idaho. Diary entries show him staying by a fire, planning to shed his suit, and attempt to head south after a midair ice-induced loss of control.
In Fukien province a new bird, a turkey, surprises locals on a mission journey from Shanghai to Foochow. The bird, described as a foreign devil chicken, draws wonder as it travels by carrying pole past observers who ask about its purpose.

George Graham Rice publisher of the Wall Street Iconoclast Walter Harvey Weed mineralogist and Walter K Yorston of Idaho pleaded not guilty to an indictment for using the mails to defraud They were each held on 5000 bail The trio were indicted for manipulating mining stocks originally owned by Yorston and misrepresenting their value Rice also known as Jacob Simon Herzig
In Washington on January 23 Senators from Maryland and Virginia sparred over anti alcohol and voting rights. Senator Bruce urged escape from the 18th amendment while Senator Glass and Borah defended Southern adherence to constitutional restraint and the 15th amendment.
Three letters signed by "the iron hand" demanded $25,000 from Mrs. Walter B. Lashar, wife of the American Chain president and New Haven railroad director. One letter said the money should be placed in a black bag behind a gate on the Lashar estate. Detectives were alerted but no attempt to collect was made.
Panama City dispatch reports Col Charles A Lindbergh shows signs of nervous strain after a 4000 mile goodwill voyage. Col Arthur Fisher says Lindy is nervous on the ground but not in the air and may need a double for social duties. Mrs Evangeline Lindbergh dismisses rumors as foolish.
Thomas A. Whalen, longtime conductor and figure in Ptah, died today after a period of illness. The 87 year old had a career spanning several decades, including roles with notable ensembles and community groups. His death marks the end of a prominent local musical era.

Dr. Frederick James Kelly aged 47, dean of administration at the University of Minnesota, was elected and accepted the presidency of the University of Idaho to take office by July 1. He will finish the current year at Minnesota and attend June commencement.
