Boston harbor tragedy unfolds when the Mary E. O’Hara collides with a barge and sinks near Finn's ledge. Eighteen crewmen perish while the remaining 23 clung to rigging for hours as rescuers, including the North Star crew, fought frigid conditions to save survivors.
A British consular official in Yokohama urged about 30 Britons to leave Japan before the crisis in American Japanese relations sharpens. US residents had already been advised to depart Japan and other Oriental territories, while Japan pressed its East Asia plans. Foreign Minister Matsuoka urged the US to reconsider its stance, saying Japan aims for stabilizing greater East Asia and opposes accusations of ambitious designs.
Governor Clark announced Idaho must supply 770 inductees in February. About 73 percent will come from southern Idaho for induction in Boise, with the rest from north Idaho for a Spokane Washington ceremony. Major General E D Peek approved the quota. facilities accommodate 755 white and 15 Negro selectees. Inductions run February 17–25 with 119 on February 26. County quotas were not yet set.

Mr and Mrs Charles Burke of Bannock county marked their golden wedding with a day long open house in Pocatello area. They wed January 21 1891 in Manti Utah and after living in Hinckley Grace and Grace Idaho moved to the Pocatello vicinity in 1934. Eight children and many relatives attended the celebration with spouses from Idaho Falls Delta and Grace.

The Idaho House approved a plan to abolish the office of tax commissioner and transfer duties to the finance and law enforcement commissioners and the state auditor. The vote was 36 to 26, with Democrats voting along party lines. The measure also moves income tax collection to the finance commissioner.
Bob Feller signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians making him the highest paid pitcher in baseball history. The agreement reportedly pays about 30 000 dollars, a raise near 2500 from last season when he won 27 games. Feller called the meeting with Indians president Alva Bradley satisfactory.
C. B. Wardlaw of Del Rio Texas urged the National Wool Growers Association to accept higher taxes to fund the defense program. He warned members to prepare financially for postwar readjustment and cautioned against protests toward federal policies while pledging the group’s loyal support. Wardlaw called for continued opposition to trade agreements and for restoring the Farm Credit Administration to independence.
Idaho WPA will employ 11 000 workers in February up from 10 000 this month with expenditures of 660 000 dollars. The Pocatello Bull Boise and Coeur d Alene districts are allocated 3377 1881 3355 and 2387 workers respectively, subject to readjustment if projects are lacking and priority given to defense related work.
