British authorities warned wireless dispatches that the captured British merchant ship St. Theodore has been converted into a German raider, suggesting at least two raiders roam the Atlantic. A steamship sank south of the equator within eight days after the Samland sighted the raider on December 4.
San Francisco date January 29 arrangements have been completed for a notable peace meeting to be held tomorrow under the Neutral Conference Peace committee. Speakers include Frank P. Walsh former Federal Commission on Industrial Relations chairwoman Mrs Helen King Robinson of Denver ex Colorado legislator and Francis P Nielson former British parliament member.
The American Importers' association protests a treasury order requiring duty on merchandise samples regardless of condition of import. Tomorrow is the effective date. Previously only specified widths and lengths entered duty free, and importers warn of unjust hardship on the trade.
Washington reports the House Rules Committee formally retained Sherman Whipple as counsel to conduct the leak inquiry. Whipple's assignment follows a committee decision dated Jan 20 and sets the investigative framework and questioning parameters for the probe.

Kanopolis Kansas January 20 A gunfight at the Mechanics State Bank left James C Wie son of the bank president wounded. Four or five assailants raided the bank vault escaping with 2500 in currency and 100 in stamps after cutting telephone and telegraph wires.
Miss Evelyn Shaw daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Van Doren Shaw wed John T. McCutcheon famed cartoonist and war correspondent. The ceremony took place at Fourth Presbyterian Church and was followed by a large reception at the bride’s parents’ residence in Chicago.
In Dubuque Iowa Mother Gert rude of the Sisters of Charity marks her 90th birth anniversary born in Ireland January 30 1827 she entered the Philadelphia order 75 years ago last September as the mother house in Dubuque notes the milestone.
Three men were burned to death and a fourth seriously injured when a fire gutted a hotel in the lower part of Portland on January 20.
Private services at the home of Dewey were attended by President Wilson and Secretary Daniels. The funeral moved to the capitol with government business suspended.
