Thousands poured into Washington for Harry S. Truman's inauguration as crowds estimate 500000 to 750000. Democrats suffered a setback when the Senate defeated a tax waiver on inaugural tickets, while Gov. Dewey sent well wishes to Truman.
The government information office announced that the executive yuan requests an unconditional and immediate cease fire by both government and communist forces and the start of peace negotiations. The move signals possible approval from Chiang Kai-shek, with legislative approval still to come.
The annual Eastern Idaho Lincoln Day banquet will be held Feb 11 in Memorial hall. Walter H Biethle of Blackfoot, chairman of the Lincoln Day association for Eastern Idaho, announced. Delegates from 13 Eastern Idaho counties are expected for the gathering at Pocatello. Assisting Biethle with the arrangements are Mrs J Bryanchhurst, chairman of the Ban Nock county women's GOP club, Dr Paul Crane, secretary treasurer of the association, and Todd Cahill, chairman of publicity.

A Union Pacific mixed train derailed about 20 miles north of Wells Nevada injuring two Pocatello residents Mr James F Hayes and Mrs Hayes and William C Harnden of Nampa. One engine and 18 cars left the tracks after a helper engine derailed on snow drifted tracks. Mrs Hayes has scalp lacerations a fractured ankle and ribs while Mr Hayes suffers facial injuries and bruises. Harnden sustained a scalp wound and minor back injuries. Officials say more sheep were trapped and the line may not be cleared until late today.
A light session of police court handled traffic and general matters. Several defendants were fined or forfeited bonds for traffic light violations. Notable entries include McLain and Hopkins fined $2.50, while others failed to appear. Several vagrant and intoxication cases were transferred or fined, with multiple individuals cited for intoxication and parking abuses.
The Bannock County versus Caribou County trial began in Grace and Bancroft area over ownership of road equipment left before village secessions on November 2. Judge C. J. Taylor presided as W. P. of Bannock County testified that an inventory showed the equipment was purchased by Bannock County taxpayers. Cross examination by County Attorney R. J. Dygert referenced roughly 25 miles of snow fencing involved.

O P Bennett reports state police announced all highways are open after drifting stalled cars west of American Falls near Massacre Rocks. Plows clear the area and crews monitor drift risk west to Burley and east to Border with slippery sections on Pocatello to Salt Lake City routes via Preston and Malad. Highway to West Yellowstone is open.
A mother leaped to death from a third floor window after saving her two children as a fire trapped a Chinatown tenement. Mrs Mary Woo died soon after hospital admission. her unborn child did not survive. Joe Woo Jr 10 suffered a possible skull fracture and Su Ann Woo 9 had back injuries. Sing Young Lee was reported missing after the blaze drove 17 residents to the street.
A Kemmerer pioneer, James Coyle, 15, drowned after tumbling into the Hamfork River while fetching water yesterday near Kemmerer Wyoming. Local authorities reported the incident on the scene and investigations proceed.
Idaho lawmakers consider activating the dormant office of labor commissioner with a $4500 annual salary and $30000 allocated to run the department for the coming biennium. The measure was among eight new house bills, six labor related, also seeking broader workmen compensation benefits.
Bannock county General hospital board asked county commissioners to raise the daily charge for county patients from four to five dollars. Attending the special session were Jack Halliwell, Sam Dunn, Ed Burrup, Wallie Wright, Drs Roberts McMahon Hughart and county physician. They cited rising maintenance and operating costs and said services cannot be extended for less than five dollars per day. The commission took the request under advisement.

In Mountain Home Idaho efforts to relieve 15 Indians a papoose and two motorists stranded four nights at a remote service station resumed. Karl V King of Salt Lake City, one of the marooned men, said a snow plow sent to reopen the road was trapped in a borrow pit.

Kraft Cheese Co. employees in Pocatello covered by Teamsters Local 983 await a decision on Christmas and New Year holiday pay. An arbitration board, with five members, met to resolve the dispute, and Mayor George R. Phillips will issue a ruling within five days.
Joe J. Wheeler of Boise is free on a $1,000 bond after being bound over to district court to face involuntary manslaughter charges. The death of John E. Folden, 62, of Emmett occurred when Wheeler's pickup struck a parked car, crushing Folden between two gasoline pumps at a service station. Wheeler appeared before Probate Judge M L Guenther yesterday.
Washington acting Secretary of State Lovett appealed for concrete Soviet actions over words from leaders in Italy and France. He urged that real progress requires deeds, not promises, as the United States seeks signs of a new Soviet peace offensive while Marshall remains away. Lovett will stay undersecretary until Acheson is sworn in and Webb is confirmed.
Sheriff Alma Marley in Buffalo Wyoming stopped a bogus check suspect on a bus, Martin Petrena, about 50, with dark hair and a big long nose. Petrena carried baggage checks and a $350 fictitious check. he was headed to Pocatello and confessed.
