A Yangtze steamer named Chekiang bound for Nantong sank after colliding with a lighter off Woosung. Up to 400 dead, 600 plus rescued, as angry relatives and locals menaced the ship operators’ offices before police restored order.
FBI announced the arrest of 21 in New York and Miami Beach as part of a crackdown on a hijacking gang that stole about thirty truckloads of scarce goods valued at 500000 in the past year. Five leaders faced $50000 bail each. Salvatore Imperiale, alias Salvatore Westo, 34, of Brooklyn, named as the gang's director.
An elderly woman died in a rooming house fire on Cleveland's east side as the Knickerbocker Manor, former Euclid avenue mansion, was demolished after a sharp explosion. Police listed 22 tenants and two visitors. Fatally burned was Mrs. Lillie Somers, 68, as investigators probed a possible gas furnace blast in the basement.
Dick Parker, student body president at Idaho Southern University, asks motorists to avoid parking along Reed hall road and the gymnasium frontage. He cites fire safety, noting the road is out-of-bounds and would hinder firefighting equipment access. the restriction follows a fall campus inspection by Fire Chief A A Girard of Pocatello.
The South Eastern Idaho Funeral Directors association will hold its winter meeting Friday evening January 24 at 7 o clock in the Bannock hotel. Secretary Deck Henderson announces the gathering.
A Saturday fire at the Triumph mine near here destroyed the 300 ton capacity concentrating mill and the John M. Rutter machine shop. The fire, discovered at 3 p m, burned so fiercely that crews thawed a frozen water tank on the Hailey fire truck before fighting the blaze. No other buildings were damaged and about 250 men could lose work.
Two thefts were reported Saturday involving travelers in the city. W F King a Union Pacific brakeman said he was robbed of a Hamilton watch and chain worth 85 dollars while napping on a Union Pacific station bench. A G Huestis of Clearfield naval supply depot reported his hotel room was entered and a billfold with 160 dollars was taken between 4am and noon.
Sheriff Alma Marley warns parents to keep children off the Parental river ice as grave danger looms. He notes his nephew Billy Curry and two other youths bragged about crossing the ice, stressing the river is dangerous year round and especially so when iced.
Los Angeles police issued a widespread bulletin for a man nicknamed Red or Bob linked to the Elizabeth Short murder. An ex convict parolee with a Marine Corps background, he was seen with Short before her mutilation death. Merced police detained Edward Glen Thorpe for questioning after his arrival by bus.
Frank A. Kemp of Denver, president of the U S Beet Sugar association, says 1947 sugar beet output will exceed last year and sugar rations may rise for consumers. The group will hold its annual meeting next July likely in California. Attending were Douglas E B Sculley of Utah Idaho Sugar Co H A Benning of Amalgamated Sugar Co and Thomas Heath of Preston Idaho representing Franklin Sugar Co.
Willard Lund county probate judge spoke to the Freshman Hi Y club at the YMCA Friday noon. He reviewed histories of recent court cases and urged youths to choose a vocation early and align their lives to excel in that field.

Sheriff Saul Clark of Burley was elected president of the Idaho Sheriff's Association for the coming year at the group's Boise convention. He succeeds Don Headrick of Boise as Ada county sheriff. Other officers named include Charles McCracken of Soda Springs as vice president and Roland Hawkes of Rupert as secretary treasurer, with Harry Ianer of Coeur d Alene, Broda Rayborn of Twin Falls, and John Evans of Malad City as directors.
A Pocatello meeting on January 22 at the Bannock hotel will bring together builders realtors materials dealers and lenders to outline President Truman's 1947 housing program and FHA changes to aid rental housing for World War II veterans. In Georgia, Lt. Gov. Thompson becomes acting governor after Ellis Arnall resigns. Herman Talmadge, elected by the legislature, claims the governorship and occupies the capitol after a 16 hour session. Arnall vows to resist and sets up temporary offices downtown. Thompson is sworn in at 10 50 a m in the nearly empty senate chamber.
Pioneer Loop directors meet in Bannock hotel at 10 am to address the 1947 season plans and by law changes. The fire-damaged Derksfield grandstand at Salt Lake City Bees home raises concerns about opening May 2 and the league's profitability without Salt Lake City. City bids for a new stand are due January 28 with hopes it will be ready for opening day.
Six of seven victims of the Southern Pacific Owl train wreck were identified as the interstate commerce commission opened an inquiry. Named victims include Joseph Harrell 30 of New Orleans and others from Los Angeles Kansas City Richmond Beaumont and Richmond. One woman remained unidentified and 71 others were injured when the night flier derailed about 12 miles north of Bakersfield.
Nine representatives from Idaho organizations protested railroad rate increases at a Idaho public utilities commission hearing. Protests named E A Weston Maurice Greene Harry W Marsh I Wilson H W Ansell J B Moore Robert Elder M C Claar and C FP Reynolds as involved parties. The commission took the protests under advisement while railroads seek intrastate rates aligned with interstate ICC action.
A Union Pacific 16 wheel drive freight engine struck three stock cars near Idaho Falls, killing 31 cattle and damaging the engine. Engineer Herman Peterson could not stop in time at about 10 mph. The cattle cars were idle on the Butte main line awaiting unloading. No injuries were reported.
The weatherman warned of near zero temperatures this morning with a moderating day reaching 30 to 35 degrees. By Monday morning expect around ten above as conditions shift from six below Saturday. today’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with snow flurries and milder temps.

Police and the sheriff’s department investigate. 18 cases of half pound assortments and 14 cases of 5 pound lots are involved.
Idaho education plans race ahead as lawmakers consider bills on school consolidation and naming reforms. The Peabody survey prompts three bills to create Southern Idaho State College at Pocatello with bachelor degrees, rename Lewiston Normal School to Lewiston State Teachers College, and rename Albion State Normal School to Albion State Teachers College.
Los Angeles police questioned two men in connection with the mutilated body of Elizabeth Short found January 15. George Piette 36 Huntington Beach Calif admitted a stolen car tied to the case and bloodstained clothing. Edward Glen Thorpe Los Angeles cowboy was also questioned amid a jacket stain inquiry.
Boise appointees include Tony Marrazo to the public works contractors state license board for six years succeeding Hank Knipple. H. L. Finch of Soda Springs takes a six year term on the sheep commission replacing J. W. Newman. Boise’s A. H. Caine is reappointed to a six year term for the same post.
