Superfortresses from Saipan bombed a Kawasaki aircraft plant near Akashi Japan in a large raid on Honshu. Early reports say all planes hit the target with heavy explosions and fires. Fighter opposition was light and no losses were reported. (Continued on Page Five.)
Army Surgeon General Maj. Gen. Norman T. Kirk told the House Military Committee that battle casualties have surged 270 percent since May, rising from 260000 to 450000 as nurses increased only 2000. He supported President Roosevelt's call for a nurse draft and noted 30000 to 32000 patients entered army hospitals monthly this year, with about 15000 leaving.
President Roosevelt, at a bi weekly news conference, praised united nations collaboration on production and food boards and joked that the first twelve years in the White House are the hardest. He dodged questions on Wallace, De Gaulle and future plans as cabinet members ponder the question.
In London the House defeated a bid to censure Prime Minister Churchill over intervention in liberated lands by 340 to 7 during a war appropriations vote. Labor critiques accused Churchill of distorting facts amid Greece and Italy policy discussions, with Eden defending government plans and future talks with Roosevelt and Stalin.
Eleven new Idaho bills move through the legislature today led by a two year extension of the soldier voting act for military service. The house copies seek to raise the state warden’s salary to 3600 and create a firemen retirement fund with dependents’ benefits funded by a quarter of annual fire insurance taxes. An adoption records secrecy bill and a county official salary bill also progress, backed by county officials’ groups.
Portland's Duane Frost, a marine sergeant in the fourth division tank unit, killed 90 Japanese in 45 minutes during a Japanese counterattack on Tinian in the Mariana Islands. He has been awarded the Silver Star as announced by the Marine Corps Public Relations section.

Seven people including the driver were injured when a Twin Falls Well line passenger bus left the highway northeast of Twin Falls and overturned. Five with minor injuries, two in serious condition. Driver N P Stewart of Twin Falls and passenger Ella McLaughlin of Twin Falls seriously hurt. Bus ended upright in a field after flipping. Everett I Irvin of Polatello among minor injuries.
An aged man known as Ephc Day, a reclusive resident, died in a cabin fire about one mile outside Weiser yesterday. Police Chief Clarence Saunders said the man had lived there for several years.
Paris AP reports German forces breach the Rhine bridgehead above Strasbourg and join with troops in northeast Alsace forming a 40 mile front against the U S Seventh Army along the Maginot line. Allied units press the Schweinfurt area while Patton's Third Army doggedly advances near Trier as snow envelopes the front.
Idaho Governor Gossett urged legislative committees to keep the gasoline tax refund at 10 percent rather than raise to 20 percent. He warned that a 20 percent deduction could block $5 million in postwar federal highway funds and blamed abuses of non highway gasoline allotments for the fund’s $200,000 unpaid claims.
Supreme Headquarters announces German casualties total 120000 from December 12 to January 11 while Allied losses reach 55421 with 18416 prisoners. The update notes destruction of 600 tanks and assault guns and heavy damage to panzer divisions and Volksgrenadier units.
Norma Briggs daughter of Frank Briggs won first place in the Pocatello division of the national Legion oratorical contest held Thursday evening at the Memorial building. Esther Kissane took second and Dick Smith third with James C. Bangs national executive committeeman in charge.
The Tokyo Domei news agency reported the death on December 29 of Rear Admiral Kiichiro Akamatsu. He is the 83rd admiral whose death has been reported by Japan since May 1944.

The Eastern Idaho Lincoln Day association directors meet at 2 p m Sunday at the Bannock hotel to arrange the annual Lincoln Day banquet likely in Pocatello at the Bannock hotel on Friday February 9 Roy Miller of Pocatello is president and Laurence Perrish of Pocatello is secretary.
Senator Truman of Missouri resigns from the Senate to assume the role of vice president elect. He retires after ten years in the chamber, ending his current term on Thursday.

Nearby stations show varied highs and lows with 23 02 inches at Butte and 31 17 inches at Salt Lake City.
Washington reports indicate Franklin D. Roosevelt will take the oath for a fourth term in a brief wartime inauguration. A 500 word address is planned, with 5 000 to 6 000 invited guests and no seating for spectators. Marine Col James Roosevelt travels from California for the ceremony.
Soviet forces breach German defenses along the eastern front capturing Krakow and driving into East Prussia. Stalin announces new offensives in East Prussia and the Carpathians, with Gorlice Jaslo and other towns seized and Krakow’s fall opening access to the Dombrowa coal fields.
HIAWATHA Utah Pete Oddinino 56 and Bern Winders 52 were killed in a cave-in at United States Fuel Co mine Wednesday night officials said. The accident underscores the dangers of underground mining in the region.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover urged nationwide vigilance for three Nazi agents trained in espionage and sabotage believed to be entering the United States. The men, ties to Erich Gimpel and William Colepaugh were identified as Max Christian Johannes Schneemann 44 Hanz Rudolf Christin Zuehlsdorff 25 and Oscar Max Wilms 37. Schneemann described as ex-Nazi party member with Colombia ties, Zuehlsdorff as Bogota advertising executive and English propagandist, Wilms formerly of Managua Nicaragua with Berlin connections. The report notes past entries via Colombia and a 1942 San Francisco arrival with subsequent gaps in record.
