Sheehan trails by nine votes to land the toga in the Empire State. Depew ties him on the first ballot. Miles Poindexter is elected in Washington.
Boston voters record indicates Senator H. C. Ledgs was re elected on the first joint ballot of the legislature. Two Democratic senators Curley and Murray of Boston backed the incumbent.
Albany January 18 reports the first joint ballot for United States senator showing Republicans Depew 90 and others Shepard 7 Parker 7 Gerard 7 Littleton 2 Herrick 2. Senator Chanler shifted from Sheehan to Shepard leaving 99 needed for a choice.
Olympia reports Miles Poindexter a Republican won the state legislature joint session noon today to become United States senator. Providence notes Henry F. Lippitt a Republican chosen to succeed Nelson W. Aldrich today as senator.
In a preliminary hearing in Judge Van Reuth's court, Tom Haines colored was bound over to answer a murder charge in the first degree. The only new evidence shows a late August quarrel with Sadie White in which Haines allegedly drew a knife at her throat. Witnesses included William Hawkins and another dining car waiter with motive alleged, plus Mrs C N Rooker. Bail was denied.
The westbound Overland Limited on the San Pedro Los Angeles and Salt Lake railroad derailed last night at Lyons Nevada. Sixteen passengers were injured none seriously. Cause unknown. Injured riders will be brought to Los Angeles this evening.
The Senate lists motions and bills including H R No 2 B No 36 to hold employers liable for injuries, B No 37 creating Randall county from Idaho county, and B No 38 amending liquor sale codes. Other items cover prohibiting late bill introduction and regulations on running at large bulls and ranges with referrals to committees.
Senator Julius Caesar Burrows of Michigan argued there is no proof that any general assembly member was corruptly influenced to vote for Lorimer. He spoke in the Senate supporting the committee on privileges and elections majority report confirming Lorimer's right to his seat in the Senate.
Douglas Ariz Jan 18 rebels have taken Sahuari pa capital of the district of the same name in Sonora Mexico without firing a shot. No federal troops were in the district making this the first town seized by rebels in Sonora. General Torres the military commander will dispatch troops to retake the town.
Washington reports the interstate commerce commission urged a suspension of general freight rate increases by western trunk lines from February 1 to March 15. The suspension aims to ease freight costs for shippers during the period.
The vessel U-3 was raised after sinking in Kiel harbor yesterday. The commander and two crewmen who stayed aboard overnight were found dead in the tower.
North and southwest Idaho may see rain or snow tonight and Thursday. Far southeast portion likely snow tonight. Snow expected Thursday with warmer temperatures in the southern region.
Twelve men walked out in a threatened strike at the Short Line shops over employing a non union worker. The non union man promised to join the union but refused to hand in his application. Foremen refused dismissal and the strike was ordered. The matter was being adjusted with expected return to work soon.
D Kotoku and 23 co defendants were sentenced to death for conspiring against the emperor and imperial family. Two others were released. After the verdict one prisoner cried Banzai and Kotoku proclaimed Long live anarchy as diplomats and prominent Japanese looked on.
William and Herbert Walker were rescued by tugs after drifting nearly fifty hours on a Lake Huron ice floe near Port Huron Michigan. The men were found alive and taken to safety following the ordeal.
L A Lehrbas of Pocatello filed his application with State Game Warden Gray to be appointed deputy for Bannock county. He has strong political and sportsman support and would bring long experience as a veteran Short Line conductor to the deputyship.
Dutch Lehrbas known as Dutch holds the Portneuf river record for the largest trout. Two years ago he won a yearly prize hung up by Ben Bean. He captured an immense rainbow trout weighing eleven pounds.
B R Sherman of Buhl leads Inter-mountain Good Roads station toward the 1911 convention to be held in Pocatello in June with delegates from five states. A special train will carry delegates up the upper Snake and Twin Falls tract and an exhibit of road making machinery is planned.
The Poca Tello YMCA invites every member to tonight's annual banquet at the association building. A full dinner is prepared by the ladies and members may vote for new board directors. Candidates include Professor W. R. Siders W. A. McHan William White W. R. Kidd F. P. Holt and Dr. O. B. Steely. Three directors will be chosen for a three year term.
A large fish, weighed in pounds and ten ounces, was frozen in a clear ice block and mailed to a trend in Anaconda. The unusual shipment highlights local interest in preserving and displaying notable catches.
The county board, after touring two proposed Trail creek routes, recommended a new south side corridor as a public highway contingent on rights of way and fencing. They granted closing of a diagonal road through private lands and discussed hospital care terms rising to 12 per patient weekly. Routine road matters followed.

Columbus Jan 18 The United Mine Workers of America heard Thomas L Lewis in his annual address. He supported granting a charter to the Western Federation of Miners and criticized the Irwin Pennsylvania strike as unauthorized and costly costing the union about 329900 dollars.
A return procession moves to Selfridge Field with cheering soldiers lifting a triumphant figure onto their shoulders after a ceremonial trip lasting about ninety minutes. Local personnel and witnesses describe the scene as a vivid show of military camaraderie and relief.
From Selfridge field 12 miles south of San Francisco, Eugene Ely piloting a Curtiss biplane completed a successful 16 minute flight landing on the deck of the cruiser Pennsylvania anchored in San Francisco Bay.
Pilot Ely lands at Selfridge field at 12 13 after a one and a half hour absence. An orderly reception greets him from Thirteenth Infantry officers and troops. He shares tea with Major J P O Neill and is cheered as soldiers carry him in triumph on their shoulders.
Gracia Santiago a Mexican bound over to the district court by Justice of the Peace All Moves to answer to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Bonds fixed at $500. in default he goes to county jail. He allegedly attacked an opponent with a pocket knife in a shack near the yards last Saturday. State’s case presented by County Prosecuting Attorney Ferguson with witnesses Dr H Smith Woolley C Palolini Constable Burnett McGarvey Patrolman George Griffith and Chief George W Smith. Evidence supported crime and warranted district court proceeding.
Another body recovered from the chamber of commerce building ruins in Cincinnati. Fireman Meentz identified among the dead, four others believed trapped under the wreckage.
In Binghampton New York at 5 AM a fire broke out in the boiler room of the dormitory building. Prompt action by firemen and attendants saved the lives of all 155 child inmates.
