London reports a joint plan by labor and capital to reinstate workers after the war. About 6 to 8 million people on government payrolls could be discharged as peace returns, with demobilization stretched over years. A central board would guide civilian reemployment and provide benefits, leave, and job placement for munition and war trades workers.
Nyack New York January 16 Mrs Ida von Claussen Dona a recurring figure in press reports for allegedly harassing Theodore Roosevelt and other notables was ordered by Supreme Court Justice Tompkins to be returned to the Middleton state hospital under superintendent custody. Her prior Bloomingdale commitment followed by a Middletown parole and marriage ended with recommitment and denial of a motion to vacate. She also previously sued Roosevelt over a failed introduction at the Swedish court.
In Mexico City on January 16 the dollar trades at a discount of 10 to 40 percent due to coin scarcity and decree requiring taxes rents and wages to be paid in Mexican coin. Hidalgos ten peso coins fetch about $5.50 in Mexico City and up to $7.50 in remote states, compared with former $4.90.

For five hours this afternoon the Tribune could not publish due to gas being off and linotype pots heated by gas. City water was also shut off, stopping boilers and rendering the gas plant nonfunctional. The company plans to store water at the gas plant to prevent a repeat issue.
Washington Jan 15 The federal government wins a supreme court ruling in a dispute with the Sargent Sutton and Kearsage Land company of Minneapolis upholding authority to collect large taxes under corporation and income tax laws from holding corporations that lease mining and land royalties.
Paris reports official municipal pawnbroking figures showing 17,000 fewer articles pawned than 1914 and 28,000 fewer than 1913 at a minimum loan of three francs. The decline signals reduced need among the poorer classes versus 1913, despite ongoing hardship.
Ohio saloon question resurges as a top state political issue. The Ohio Anti Saloon League plans to draft a statewide prohibition amendment and seeks broad church labor temperance support. Opening schedules include 3 pm matinee and two night shows at 7 15 and 9 15, with Henry Walther's The Truth Soul as the opening attraction.
Thomas Lawson testified on the leak to the stock market tied to President Wilsons peace note. Rep Harrison moved to subpoena J P Morgan J Bache H P Davison Frank Vanderslip Arthur Lippear and B C Wexler prompting subpoenas. Lawson described meetings with Henry and McAdoo and alleged links to Baruch Lansing Bernstorff and others in a broad conspiracy.
Thomas W. Lawson testified before the House Rules Committee accusing a cabinet officer a banker and a senator of stock market wrongdoing. He named Secretary McAdoo banker H Pliney Fiske and Senator Henry as central figures and said others like Pat M Warburg and Ruth Thompson Visconti supported or heard the accusations. Subpoenas were issued for several individuals and organizations connected to the alleged leak with McAdoo Tumulty and Price set to testify.
Carson City Nev Jan 16 The Nevada legislature opened its biennial session with expected focus on reform measures. Divorce legislation prohibition and changes to gambling laws are anticipated to dominate the agenda. A petition for an initiative act to make the state dry has already been filed.
Watertown January 16 The South Dakota State Horticultural Society opens three days of sessions with town and country civic improvement as the general topic. Prominent speakers from outside the state including members of the American Civic Improvement Association will address the meeting.
