Jack Johnson was taken off a train in Battle Creek Michigan and detained at home of friends while Chicago authorities request detention and extradition. The boxer admitted he was bound for Toronto and defended his actions while noting he did not intend to break federal law. Johnson faces charges including violation of the white slave act and jewelry smuggling.
Boise Idaho January 14 192X Senator W E Borah was re elected United States senator on the first ballot by the Idaho legislature Borah received 75 votes while George A Tannahill tallied 5 and K I Perky 2 all votes were reported today in Boise.
Special to the Tribune from Boise reports at high noon the senate and house opened ballots for senator. In the senate for the six year term Borah Perky and Tannahill were named amid eulogies of Heyburn. For the two year term Brady led on first ballot with six votes and Ailshie seven as the house continued nominating. The house votes show Ailshie eighteen Brady seventeen Homer six Beale seven Babl two French four Nugent three Dubois one. The houses will meet in joint session tomorrow.
In Fargo North Dakota on January 14, farmers and scientists from Minnesota and the Dakotas gathered for the tri state agricultural societies round up. The event runs through the week featuring the Tri State Grain and Stock Growers Association convention and meetings of dairymen corn growers horticulturists and poultry breeders.
Ottawa opens after holiday recess with a heavy calendar. Debates pinpoint delaying all other business until the Naval bill is disposed of. Opposition plans to press the Naval issue at length while the government remains confident the measure will pass without major changes.
In Vancouver on January 14 a Canadian Pacific freight engine fatally struck George Dupree and another incident nearby left two Japanese laborers struck by a second engine. Dupree died within moments while one worker is not expected to survive and the other may recover.
Topeka January 14 Governor Hodges urging Kansas lawmakers to press the state delegation to back a resolution for electing federal judges by direct vote. The message marks his first address to the legislature.
Lansing January 14 William Alden Smith was chosen to succeed himself in the United States senate by the two houses of the Michigan legislature Alfred Lucking of Detroit received the complimentary vote of the Democratic members in the same session
Topeka Kansas January 14 With Democrats dominant in the new legislature bold laws are expected this winter The topics include initiative referendum recall inheritance tax eight hour workday for women state irrigation aid mothers pensions workmen compensation and the Massachusetts ballot law Judge William H Thompson of Garden City the Democratic U S Senate candidate is slated to succeed Charles Curtis after defeating Governor Stubbs in the primary.
Elmer Vigus and John Hartnett face trial in the circuit court for alleged robbery of the Chicago and Alton Hummer train at Iles Junction on the night of December 23. The case attracts much interest as jury selection proceeds and testimony is expected to hinge on the December heist.
Special convention of the Farmers' Union of Texas met in Fort Worth to discuss policy and plans to expand membership and influence across the state. National President C B Barrett and other cooperative movement leaders attended.
Martineau and Browning seek permission to construct and operate an electric power transmission line from Lava Hot Springs along Bannock County roads. They plan a hydroelectric plant at Lava Springs producing 4000 to 5000 horsepower for transmission to nearby towns. Attorney Carl Barnard filed the easement application.
Washington January 14 The house Ways and Means Committee resumed hearings on aluminum steel watch movements and machinery tools. WV N Donner president Cambria Steel Co testified his firm owns property valued at seventy five million and employs nineteen thousand workers producing over a million tons of nails bars rods and wire nails last year urging specific duties on iron and steel products.
Vancouver January 14 James Longman was killed and John McPherson seriously injured when struck by a taxicab this morning.
William Kettenbach president and George H. Kester cashier of Lewiston National Bank Idaho must serve five years each after U S district court in southern Idaho upheld a lower court ruling. They were convicted April 6 1911 of inflating reserves and reported to the national controller of the currency for seven years. Sentences run concurrently.
A warm wave spreads across the western United States as snow in the Rockies begins to melt. Rail lines on the Great Northern and Milwaukee systems ease toward restoration while the Northern Pacific division runs. No recent snow in the mountains and river high water anticipated in western Washington. Alaska reports mild conditions with Dutch Harbor at 40 above.
A Weather Bureau flood bulletin notes the Ohio River rising below Kanawha mouth while falling above it. Cincinnati’s stage this morning stood at 61.9 feet, about nine-tenths of a foot higher than Monday, with a further rise indicated.

Firefighters rescued six children and parents from suffocation as flames damaged the S Inlander and Company plant, paper and willow ware makers, causing about 75000 dollars in damage and forcing evacuation of nearby tenants.
London dispatch reports Balkan allies decide to break peace talks with Turkey and end the armistice signed December 3. Bulgarian, Greek, Montenegrin, and Serbian delegates plan formal notice to the Porte while allied commanders prepare to terminate hostilities, amid siege at Adrianople and renewed fighting in the region.
