Bannock county officials explained layoffs of 21 county surveyor staff and all highway department workers as an economy measure. County leaders said an emergency crew remains ready, with essential snow removal personnel volunteering, as residents are not left without service. Continues on Page Five.
Three men arrested December 29 on first degree burglary charges had a preliminary hearing in Justice Hyde's court and were bound over to district court for trial under $1000 bail each. Defendants are Carl Paddy Fred Glenn and Joshua Savok. Twelve witnesses testified at the hearing. The trio is charged with breaking into the storage house of the Pocatello Hide Wool and Fur company.
The Jay-C Ettes meet at 8 at the YWCA to arrange a January 20 dinner honoring Pocatello's young man of the year. They will also discuss a February 9 visit by Juani ta Hancock of Boise, state Jay-C Ette president. Refreshments will be served by Mrs. John Banyard and others.
Postal Inspector E. M. Harkins was shot to death in the main post office lobby. Police arrested 65-year-old Joseph Donnelly, booked on murder charges, with a federal case to follow. Donnelly claimed he acted after being accused, slandered, and humiliated. Ten letters to the president, newspapers, the FBI, the inspector of mails, and a magazine were found on him.
In Fort Worth Texas area, noted rodeo clown Ralph Jasbo Fulkerson was killed when his pickup overturned on an ice coated highway two miles east of Watuaga. The accident ended a long career with national recognition in rodeo entertainment.
Five Turkish state railroad officials visiting Pocatello declare American railroads the best in the world after a month and a half tour. The Ankara residents spend four months studying U S setups to revamp Turkey. They will visit Eastern and Southern lines and observe operations of D and RG and CDNQ before returning around March 15, accompanied by F B Lewis of Omaha.
The Board of Commissioners laid off 21 county employees including W. P. Havener’s office staff in an economy sweep. None had social security or unemployment insurance. Names and years with the county include R. M. Carter 2? years and Harry W Willson 19 years. shop foreman Leo Frew 14 years. many others followed with 1 to 18 years of service.

The offer would evacuate troops with light arms via Tangku port, 27 miles away, as about 16 ships waited offshore. Communists reportedly would protect surrendered soldiers if terms are followed. The situation remained unclear, but surrender appeared being arranged under pressure from local demand. This peace move could influence broader civil war settlements.
Idaho lawmakers opened the 10th day of session with Rep. William Kempfer proposing a county option gambling bill. Licenses for card games at 50 dollars a month and roulette and dice at 100 dollars, with revenue splits to state county and city. Co sponsor Rep. Helen Miller. administration aims to repeal 1947 slot machine law.
Pocatello contractor O D Berry was assaulted after a late night ride near Portneuf Park. Two men blocked his path, slugged him for $10, and fled with his new 1948 Plymouth after he was left unconscious near Swain's service station. He and authorities seek clues to catch suspects.
The general committee of the Brotherhood of Idaho and Utah opened its four day session today at the Hotel Bannock. General Chairman E. B. Gayhart of Pocatello prepared a program of proposals for the ensuing year. A. F Whitney of Cleveland is president. Whitney says in The Trainmen News that Big Business combines seek to block progressive Democratic acts.
AFL officials urged separate action on Taft Hartley repeal and Wagner Act restoration before any new labor bill. Three AFL legislative staffers told Senate and House labor leaders the federation opposes a one package approach that would wrap both changes in one bill with Truman’s Wagner amendments. They request two distinct bills.
President Truman flies to Pinehurst North Carolina to visit Secretary of State George C Marshall who is ill. In London the British cabinet supports tough policy on Israel and foresees no shift in Middle East approach.

Boise Idaho Rep Edith Miller introduces a measure to set blood test standards for drunken driving. The bill states that blood alcohol at five hundredths of one percent by weight means a defendant is not under the influence, while one hundredth of one percent or more would trigger consideration of intoxication.
The Associated Press reports a winter storm delivering eight inches of snow in Orange County California and eight inches in Silverado Canyon while western Texas and the panhandle faced sleet and ice. Prolonged cold caused power shortages in the Pacific Northwest prompting voluntary brownouts and warnings to conserve electricity.
In Cairnbrook Pennsylvania a 27 year old worker William Wallace was crushed under a 20 ton rock slide at the Loyalhanna Coal Co mine. He died shortly after being brought to Windber hospital despite more than 15 hours of relief effort by a band of miners and relays.
Senator Myers of Pennsylvania prepares a bill to extend rent ceilings through June 1951 and place thousands of dwellings back under rent control. Maybank, head of the Senate Banking Committee, says the measure could become the administration’s rent bill as the committee opens its session. The current law expires March 31 and the plan aims for an extended control period of at least two years.
