President Roosevelt asserts authority to seize gold held by the Federal Reserve System though offering no immediate plan. Officials report no sign of an immediate move to commandeer the $3.6 billion in gold the reserve banks hold.
Washington reports indicate the White House may signal new monetary moves today with a possible move toward gold nationalization. President Roosevelt will meet reporters in the late afternoon and no definite sign is expected. Officials disclosed that Roosevelt has at least considered gold nationalization after a White House meeting with Morgenthau, Governor Black, and Attorney General Cummings. The treasury and Federal Reserve Board figures show substantial U S gold stocks as the year begins.
The battleship Nelson the flagship of Admiral Sir William Boyle’s home fleet remained grounded at the harbor entrance after attempts to refloat it failed. A crew of about 1000 was assembled on deck while destroyers maneuvered at high speed to create wash, swinging the stern but not freeing the bows.

He credited NRA wage stimulation and noted January is usually slow. Dun and Bradstreet sees solid first quarter gains with widespread strength in retail sales.
Babe Ruth agreed to a salary reduction with the New York Yankees for 1934. He struck the deal with owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert at Florida camp and will sign a formal contract Monday. Barrow would not disclose exact figures though initial guesses ranged to $37,500.

Caldwell Idaho January 12 Cecil Evans twenty one faces murder charges in connection with the death of Harry D Rouse a Caldwell fur dealer who died in Nampa hospital after a skull fracture following a morning assault and holdup Evans was identified by Rouse and will be arraigned before Probate Judge Donald Anderson Evans was arrested at his parents home near Pleasant Ridge and said he planned to marry next Sunday.
Charles E. Mack, originator of the Moran and Mack duo known as the Two Black Crows, dies after a car overturn near Mesa Arizona. Moran and others survived. Mack Sennett and Mary Jane Mack among the injured escapees. Mack muttered of an ending as the vehicle crashed en route to Hollywood for film work.
D. Sid Smith of Shoshone, president of the Idaho Wool Growers Association, in a convention address, cautions that prosperity seems based on decline and recovery rather than manipulation by politicians. He criticizes relief programs, praises grazing fee reforms, credit facilities, and lamb price based taxes, while condemning processing taxes on hogs and mutton.
Jan. 12 Boise former city clerk Ane gela Hopper, serving time for embezzlement, was called before a grand jury investigating a $79,000 shortage in her accounts dating back to 1923. No indictments yet. jury told to probe all phases for broader involvement. Arthur Bruce, a former Boise resident and machine dealer, was arrested in Denver on secret grand jury indictments for forgery and obtaining money by false pretenses.
Dr Edwin Hubble estimates about 75 million nebulae lie within the reach of the Mount Wilson telescope and says no large super system is evident. He notes average separations of around 650000 light years and a Corona borealis cluster of about 600 nebulae from a sky survey of 44000 nebulae on 1283 photographs.
