In Southwest Harbor Maine on January 3 a mysterious tidal wave hit Bernard village prompting Bass Harbor to empty and a ten foot surge followed by two smaller waves. About fifty fishing boats were driven ashore and two men in a dory narrowly escaped injury from ice. A steamer captain noted a bore type wave common to certain coves and recalled nearly shipwrecking years ago. Nearby Vinalhaven reported rumbling sounds and a possible earthquake tremor prior to the Bernard event.
