Paris reports a spell of frosty weather slows the Seine flood now rising four to five more meters by Sunday. Suburban districts near the Marne and Seine face financial ruin from damage to household goods. the Val de Seine station retaining wall collapsed, closing the station after days of danger.
The Ohio River climbed about one tenth of a foot per hour to roughly 54 feet in Cincinnati, two feet above flood stage, with officials predicting continued but slower rise tonight or tomorrow as waters spread over a wider area. In Louisville crews reported high water and floor conditions along Kentucky river points, with some displacement but no widespread hardship yet.
Washington January 5 AP the Senate police lands committee voted to compelEdward B McLean Washington publisher to provide a sworn statement on the $200000 loan he made to former interior secretary Albert B Fall whose finances are under review in the Tea m of Dome investigation. McLean's attorney A Mitchell Palmer said little as Senator Walsh urged personal examination. A physician's certificate stated McLean needs rest in Palm Beach Florida.
Manila dispatch reports U S Army headquarters denying claims that aircraft over Mindanao were used to spread Moro propaganda or influence Philippine independence. The statement says flights are part of a general reconnaissance to locate landing fields and assess possible aerial mail service nationwide.

Bellingham Washington police chief Tom Frazer granted permission by the police court to use confiscated moonshine in the radiators of his car and others to keep them from freezing. Report says the liquor serves as a radiator coolant and that the moonshine would soon be destroyed.
Dr Robert S Frank an apparent medical corps officer at Presidio San Francisco disappeared with his brides 38 year old niece and fled with her. He took 1600 from his wife and left his bride near Trade Lake Wisconsin as federal authorities investigate along with Miss Marion Christopherson in Kansas City. No such doctor exists at the Presidio or Ninth Army corps area denying the claim.
William Hilsabeck, a Lone Butte district farmer, was in custody in Hanna Alberta on charges of abusing his six year old son and ten year old daughter with a horsewhip. The girl is reported to be seriously injured and may not recover. the children hid the key to a violin case, provoking the assault.
Pat Moran of New Orleans defeated Johnny Shugrue of Waterbury in Madison Square Garden in under five rounds. The referee stopped the bout in the fifth to save Shugrue from further punishment, giving Moran a technical win toward Benny Leonard’s world title claim.
The city of Los Angeles ratified a peace pact ending the blue law dispute sparked by the Thanksgiving Eve halt of motion picture group protests. An ordinance now allows public dancing until 2 am on weekdays and extends theater and holiday dancing hours to 2 am on certain evenings, ending the long stand.

In Belwood Nebraska a gas leak from a boiler burner caused the asphyxiation of John Hager the oldest member of the Masonic order in Nebraska and his wife. The couple lived in Belwood and the Hager name is linked to Me braska Masonry. One daughter Mrs W B Henry resides in San Diego California.
Two Abraham Lincoln letters to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles sold for 1250 dollars each at a civil war documents auction. One discusses the gun boat Monitor and Norfolk, the other from August 23, 1864, references McClellan’s possible defeat. A third letter asking for a war steamer to guard the Potomac and the capital brought 470 dollars.
A historic cold wave blanketed the nation with subzero temperatures from Minnesota to Illinois and across the central west. The frigid air caused deaths, widespread suffering, and disrupted communications as temperatures plunged 20 to 30 below in Minnesota and up to 25 below in Illinois, with Montana and Colorado spared the deepest cold.
Virginia Minnesota was named the coldest spot with an unofficial 39 degrees below zero. Four men died from the cold and two more and a woman injured by a car were linked to the freezing conditions. St Louis and St Paul reported subzero readings as the cold persisted with some relief expected later.
