In Los Angeles a flood disaster leaves 39 dead 66 missing and 34 identified as rescuers mobilize 7000 troops to restore order. Officials expect about 50 deaths. $5 million in damages mainly in Glendale Montrose and Venice areas as relief work, road clearance, and emergency bridges proceed.
E M Bagley of Salt Lake City named chairman and Judge James H Wolfe chosen as vice president to broaden the governors advisory committee on liquor control. They plan to recruit women and young people from 25 upward to reflect diverse attitudes while addressing liquor law violations and enforcement. Governor Blood urged strict adherence to dry statutes amid revelations of bars and high class cafes serving liquor.
M H King company filing in district court challenges the 1933 chain store tax as unconstitutional. The Burley Rupert Rexburg Montpelier Jerome Gooding and Buhl locations face fees of five to five hundred dollars per store with deductions for owned real property. Boise January 3 The state grand jury examined a group of witnesses tied to the Angela Hopper defalcation case as court instructions permit immunity for testimony with secrecy maintained. The inquiry centers on a $79 000 clerk's office shortage and potential involvement of others. Reporters were warned not to publish witness names to protect grand jury proceedings.
Minnie Gladys Moroney entered court with a shoe as she charged husband Thomas Moroney with beating her in 1933. The case resulted in the first divorce granted in 1934 in Chicago.

John Amato, 69, was struck by a passenger train after a cow wandered onto a grade crossing in Dallas. The animal was killed and Amato suffered a broken leg.

A coroner's jury ruled 17 year old Jess Wynn died from injuries after an automobile struck him near the Blue Moon dance hall. The verdict cited pulmonary embolism and brain concussion as causes. Witnesses included Wynn's brother-in-law and a Bannock county deputy sheriff who found the body. Wynn, born March 13, 1916, had recently fought at the Blue Moon and leaves seven siblings and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wynn.

Funeral services for James Hyrum Russell 74 a rancher of Irwin Idaho will be held in Salt Lake City at the George A Jenkins chapel. He died in Idaho Falls last Friday and will be buried in Mill Creek Utah. Russell was born November 11 1859. Local forecast notes fair tonight and Thursday with little temperature change.
Acting Secretary Henry L. Roosevelt announced that six naval patrol flying boats under Rear Admiral A. W. Johnson would take off January 9 weather permitting for a flight to Hawaii with take-off from San Francisco.
