Train No. 1 was halted at Reese Utah by two masked robbers who shot two porters and robbed passengers in a midnight heist. Officers pursued for ten hours as residents and officers surrounded the Reese area, with losses pegged at about $1,260 while the express car was spared.
The Supreme Court reconvened in Washington with Chief Justice White presiding and new associates Van Devanter and Lamar present. It marks the first full bench in over a year as several major cases including commodity clause, Standard Oil, tobacco dissolution, and corporation tax matters are set for argument in coming months.
James J. Gallagher was arraigned in Jersey City for trial on felonious assault charges stemming from the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse shooting at Hoboken on August 9. Otto Erickson a well known Montana division passenger engineer fell from the running board of his engine yesterday morning after leaving Blackfoot sustaining a badly sprained left leg. He was brought to the emergency hospital in Pocatello and later moved to the Pocatello house where he rests easy. He was pulling No 1 the north bound train when the accident occurred.
Washington January 3. After five years of litigation the federal government gains the right to press a suit against the estate of mining magnate Winfield Scott Stratton for nearly five thousand dollars in back stamp tax under the Spanish American War tax measure.
J. Eb. Davis, longtime chief dispatcher for the First district of the Idaho division, is transferred to Pocatello to lead the Second, Third, and Fifth districts and the Twin Falls branch. He succeeds T. C. Collopy, whose resignation takes effect January 1. Assistant Superintendent G. J. Cunningham also resigns and will relocate to Ogden. Collopy has received an offer from U. R. & N. for a strong position.
Members of the Quebec legislature gathered in the capitol to begin the session. The agenda centers on public road improvements and expanding educational facilities across the province, signaling a busy legislative push.
Denver January 3. The Colorado Legislature convened for its regular biennial session with plans to advance progressive legislation. The body will not elect a United States senator this year.
Preparations are underway in Springfield for a new trial of Illinois officials Stanton C. Pemberton state senator and Joseph S. Clark state representative. They face conspiracy to secure bribes over the legislature furniture contract. The prior October trial ended with a hung jury.

Chicago January 3 Judge C C Kohlsaat ruled the government may dismiss the equity suit against the National Packing company in the Sherman anti trust case tied to J Ogden Armour and other indicted packers. The ruling marks the first blow in their criminal prosecution challenges.

Swift and Company stockholders vote to raise capital from 60 million to 75 million dollars by issuing 150 thousand additional shares. New shares to be issued at directors discretion. not all immediately issued.

In London on January 3 a mob of anarchists held a four story house in Sidney Street, exchanging heavy fire with police troops and guardsmen. Six bodies were found after the fire collapsed the fortification. Dozens were wounded as civil authorities regained control later in the day.
Utah delegates travel by special train to Portland for the 1911 convention and press their case to land Salt Lake as the 1912 host city. The troop wears badges featuring a sheep head and Delegate. Wyoming towns Boise Idaho also vie for the event. Salt Lake City aims to be the association headquarters.
In Rockford Illinois citizens voted today on adopting the commission form of municipal government over the aldermanic system. The special election decides adoption or rejection of the plan with results expected tomorrow.
Dover reports the Delaware legislature opened with plans to elect a U S senator this session. The race drew little attention as the re election of Senator Du Pont appears assured.
Washington January 3 The Supreme Court held unconstitutional the bank guaranty laws of Oklahoma Nebraska and Kansas opposing state guarantees of bank deposits amid a fight over public protection of depositors.
A major blaze struck Granville Washington county wiping out the business district and part of the residential area. Loss is placed at about 250000. Firemen could not fight the flames due to an essentially empty reservoir supplying the town with water.
Harisburg Pa January 3 The Pennsylvania legislature convened in a biennial session after organizing both houses and hearing Governor Stuart deliver his final message. He reviewed his administration focusing on finances Capitol civil cases state building operations election laws highway improvements pure food laws and other public matters.
The 37th Minnesota legislature convened in St Paul on January 3 with a full agenda. Main clash centers on immediate reapportionment and term cuts for new four year senators. County option for saloon licenses looms, while reform groups push for initiative referendum and direct primary expansion. Woman suffrage advocates plan demonstrations and a distance tariff proposal resembles Iowa law.
Indiana lawmakers plan to repeal the county option law and substitute city and township option with provisions for high license and liquor regulation. They will consider adopting the commission form of city government for some classes and advance primary election and good roads laws. The U S Senate race will be a formality as John W Kern is set to succeed Beveridge after last November primaries.
