Boise is to host the 30th Idaho legislature with Democrats controlling the Senate and Republicans holding the House. Senators and Representatives arrived for party caucuses as the interim session begins under Gov. Robins with streamlined ceremonies expected Monday morning.
New Delhi India and Pakistan agreed to an immediate cease-fire ending their 14 month feud and to a UN supervised plebiscite to decide Kashmir's future as a New Year peace gesture. Both sides reported withdrawal of armed forces.
Cold weather and snow sharply eased the flood danger in the northeastern United States Saturday after causing four deaths and property damage running into the millions. Swollen streams began to subside as temperatures fell and rain turned to snow. Many persons still could not return home as utility service remained disrupted and some highways and rail routes stayed impassable. On the first day of the 1949 derby in Gate City, Charles Douglas Bryan was born at 4:35 a m at Pocatello General to Charles and Joan Bryan of American Falls. He weighed nine pounds five ounces and measured 22 inches. The King succeeds LeRoy Hillman as title holder.

The civil aeronautics board awarded Western Air Lines an additional 975000 dollars to adjust mail service compensation for May 1, 1944, to December 31, 1948. Effective today the mail pay rate rises to 25.7 cents per mile from 14.2 cents.
