Police Officer Shot, Tackles Suspect in Weiser District
Officer Owen Horne, 26, was shot in the right thigh after arresting Henry Clyde Berry 21 in Weiser at 1:15 a.m. Berry bluffed a gun, then fired when Horne challenged him. Horne overpowered Berry, officers rushed him to the hospital, Berry jailed. condition not regarded as serious. Berry recently arrived from Hermiston Oregon.

Killer to Tell Of Murders
Convicted murderer Jake Bird hinted in a New Year’s day death cell interview that he would clear up several unsolved ax slayings over the last 20 years before his scheduled hanging at the Washington state peniten tiary. He admitted killing Mrs. Marie Manners in Pueblo Colorado last October and promised to tell more later. Bird spoke to Jim Schick of the Walla Walla Union Bulletin with Warden Tom Smit present. He said he had told Under sheriff Joseph Karpach of Tacoma a lot and would tell him more when he returns next week. He wished to die with a clear conscience and said he wanted to talk to the right people. Governor Blue ordered an inquiry after Bird’s admission of a 1928 slaying. A judge who Bird thanked for a fair trial died in Tacoma just hours earlier.
