The Democrats nominate Joseph W. Burns of Tennessee for speaker with a formal election forthcoming. Party leaders push a 218 member rule to speed bills while awaiting President Roosevelt’s opening message and budget plan for the 74th Congress.
In Saarbrucken on January 1 clashes between Nazis and opponents left two dead and at least 100 injured. Weapons ranged from guns to pitchforks as battles erupted in multiple towns including Saarlouis and Puettlingen ahead of a January 13 plebiscite. Police arrested about 50, with Saar commissioner Knox threatening officials over leaks.
Whitman college basketball defeated the University of Idaho 41 to 36 in Moscow. The Missionaries trailed briefly in the first period but seized control and maintained the lead, responding at critical moments to secure their second win over the Vandals.

William Sproule former president of the Southern Pacific company who retired in 1928 after 46 years in rail service died at his San Francisco home from a heart attack. He began as a freight clerk and rose to lead the railroad during a long career.

In Flemington New Jersey January 2 1934 with 10 of 12 jurors chosen Supreme Court Justice Thomas W Trenchard adjourned the Hauptmann trial after a lunch recess. Prospective jurors including Charley F Snyder Mrs Rose Pill Verna Snyder and Charles Walton Jr faced questioning while Col Lindbergh and Mrs Lindbergh watched. Five youths riding in a car plunged 20 feet into the icy Portneuf River after crashing through a West Wyeth street fence at 12 33 a m John Bolingbrook 21 of Arbon driver was arrested on drunk driving and speeding charges Serget Oliver and Police Officer Robidoux plus Chickelley of the fire department rescued Bolingbrook Ardella Davis 13 and Lois Davis 16 from the river All involved were taken to General hospital with Bolingbrook suffering facial injuries and others in shock or bruises
