Los Angeles reports the third catastrophe in nine months as heavy rains flood southern California. The Sunday downpour brought floods, at least 34 known dead, 28 missing, 35 seriously injured, with widespread damage across the metropolitan area during a peak holiday period.
Idaho Falls January 2 Mrs Mary A Merrill known as Molly Merrill 39 died after drinking poison at a local hospital coroner Fred Proter ruled it suicide. She was despondent over her husband Lee Merrill's death last summer a brother in law said he saw her take the poison about 6 pm and die about an hour later. Her daughter from Ogden and sisters in Burley were notified awaiting arrivals.
Beverly Hills California January 2 Will Rogers writes from California about sudden rain and the novelty of water in dry river beds. He jokes that old settlers miss the sight and mentions a planned parade in appreciation of the rain. He laments that Nicholas Murray Butler did not join the trip, noting the Republican convention as his focus.
The revised death toll from the Sunday Los Angeles flood rises to 31 with 23 identified. Names include J. E. A man and a woman were killed when their car weaving with flashing headlights crashed into a machine driven by Alex Kramer near Harrigan Washington. The dead woman was identified as Mrs. A. F. Shawnee Oklahoma January 2 AP The guard over Wilbur Underhill was doubled as the southwestern desperado clung to life Physicians say he is dying No reason given for the extra guard over the bank robber and killer Underhill His bride of a month and Raymond Roe owner of a truck used in an attempted bank burglary were taken to Oklahoma City for questioning by federal agent R H Colvin Colvin led the raid in which Underhill was captured after a gunfight in which Eva Mae Nichols a beauty parlor operator was fatally wounded Colvin said Underhill admitted the attempted burglary and robberies in Kansas Kentucky Arkansas and Oklahoma Roe was wounded in the shoulder during the raid on Miss Nichols home
Mrs. Alice Drake West age 38 wife of Alma West superintendent of Utah Power and Light died of influenza in Alexander Idaho She was born in Corinne Utah and lived in Idaho Falls Two daughters Mrs Virginia Simonsen and Miss Dorothy West survive Funeral services will be in Soda Springs Wednesday under the Latter Day Saints church Burial will be in Brigham City.

The eight projects total 611000 in value, with loans and grants allocated to waterworks and reservoirs in Alameda Moscow Pocatello Shoshone Weiser Weston. Idaho also shared in broader civil works and emergency programs, though state spending totals were not disclosed.
In Oakland California an enraged beggar jabbed his thumb into William Lentzs eye after Lentz gave him a dime. Doctors said sight in the eye was destroyed. Lentz, 49, said the man demanded more than ten cents and then attacked.

Ira J. Taylor of Rigby gained control of about 250 prisoners at the state penitentiary as he succeeded George Rudd as warden. Rudd was ousted after policy clashes with the prison board, while Lydia Southard faced a life sentence for poisoning her husband on a trip to Twin Falls county.
