A Pensacola blast wrecked a Newport company retort building killing twelve and injuring eight while ten to fifteen remain missing. Firemen battled smoldering debris as bodies burned beyond identification and four gravely injured faced hopeless prognosis.
Thomas P. Henry president of the American Automobile Association proposes a bill of rights for motorists in a New Year greeting. He denounces state regulations and roadside harassment, appeals against discriminatory laws and arrests for antiquated speed limits, and calls for reforms after highway accidents.

Olympia Washington January 2 A bill to submit to voters next fall an amendment to the state constitution to free no comment of Bible in public schools was approved by the lower house 68 to 23 and sent to the senate for further action.

Dorothy Townsley aged five died from the shooting spree blamed on her mother Ruth Townsley who was wounded in the breast but expected to recover. Margaret eight, the eldest, was reported out of danger. a baby girl eight months and a boy three were killed instantly. The mother claimed she had to do it and showed bitterness toward husband Frank Townsley.
