A massive earthquake struck the Solo mon islands in the South Seas causing deep crevasses and a major upheaval. No loss of life was reported though property damage could be large and the tremor lasted several minutes per a Samoa report via Governor Moore.
New York February reports indicate the Thaw trial failed to seat the twelfth juror after thirteen talesmen were examined and repeated peremptory challenges. The defense signals insanity will be argued and testimony set to begin next week. A salesman testified of being approached about the case raising a court moment of tension as Bernard Gerstman was then chosen as the twelfth juror.
The Chicago health committee authorizes 250 more medical inspectors for ninety days to water all public schools with disease control. Oak Park closes its schools. City council seeks $50,000 to build a contagious disease hospital.
Edward P. Hipple real estate broker and president of the Real Estate Trust Company, shot himself last night in Philadelphia. He had wrecked the firm last summer and was believed tormented by his brother Frank A. Hipple's fate. The death is ruled death by own action as investigators note his brood ing over his brother's tragic ending.
Boise February legislature session features two pivotal votes confirming the new alignment remains intact. The house backs Wyman anti trust bill 29 to 19 under the insurgent Republican Democrat coalition. Cunningham anti pass bill postponed. The house also sends McCracken child labor bill to judiciary for drafting a local option bill. Absent lawmakers listed. Senate opposition noted as risk to harmony in state politics.
George Stein a news agent on the Oregon Short Line was found dead after visiting Dr. Auguire for a shock. Autopsy and coroner's inquest heard testimony of possible blows and burns with bruises on the body. Stein had tuberculosis and syphilis with heart disease. The jury adjourned to continue tomorrow as arrangements were made at Lindquist’s parlors.
Mayor Cleare relays a sad case of destitution from across the river. A four day old infant remains with a deserted mother near the old dancing pavilion by the pumphouse bridge. The city seeks charitable donations through the mayor who will provide the address for aid.
Harrisburg Pennsylvania January 1 million dollars in losses reported after a fire destroyed the Grand Opera House block and a five story building across the street. The blaze started with an explosion in a store in the Opera House block. Actor John Smith was rescued from a window ledge after a small ladder was used.
Pittsburg February 1 George Th Nutt who died here recently in his will bequeaths to his wife a life interest in his estate valued at 850 000 but provides at her death that the entire estate shall be expended in the purchase of toys and playthings for the poor children of Allegheny county especially those in public institutions
The Boise Statesman reports the U S judgeship contest gains interest after Dietrich’s visit though not campaigning. Endorsements flow from legislature members for Chief Justice Ailshie with strong Republican and Democratic support including Stockslager Gooding and Heyburn. Dietrich backed by Brady. Dietrich expected bar support. Edgar Wilson’s backers mobilize endorsements across regions.
At a special Pocatello Trades and Labor meeting a resolution urged support for McCracken House Bill No 22, a broader employers liability measure than Abbott Bill No 30. The group sent letters to Bannock County legislators urging passage, noting McCracken liability extends to damages from employer negligence and defective railway components, with protections against insurance or indemnity contracts acting as bars to suits. Abbott bill applies only to railroads.
Oregon Short Line officials issued strict instructions from General Manager Bancroft on interstate pass use under the new law. Passes cannot cover travel outside the starting state. riders must pay full fare beyond state lines. Special employee and charity passes may be honored to the state line when tied to an interstate trip.

A secret gathering at Eagle Hall drew about 35 men to launch a Citizens' ticket for the April city election. Dr. C B Steely presided as chair and D J Toneray served as secretary as resolutions urged support for a nonpartisan municipal slate. No press was admitted and the secretary refused Tribune access to copies. The meeting aimed for a harmonious campaign.

Manders, formerly with Scowcreft, closed a deal yesterday to purchase the Portneuf Tea Company from the Redford brothers. He now runs the North Main Street tea house and plans to move his east side stock to the old location, consolidating the two outlets.
