Washington Rep John W McCormack a Democrat from Massachusetts told reporters there is nothing business need fear from the new administration though he did not discuss specific bills. He spoke Monday emphasizing steady stance toward commerce and industry in the early days of the 81st Congress.
President Truman blasted Russia as a major obstacle to peace at a Kansas City luncheon honoring Eddie Jacobson. He said contracts are not sacred to the Soviet government and urged the US to press for an understanding to achieve world peace while praising the Russian people. He spoke at length about Near East issues and warned one ally has not cooperated.
In Buffalo New York a fire at a parish rectory killed Rev John W Peel and seriously burned Rev Martin B Fell. Firemen found Peel critically burned and carried him to the church high altar where he died. Both priests were believed to be the only occupants.
John Denman of the Chief theater hosts a Thursday 10 a.m. food drive under Sam Hanson’s Good Neighbor policy. Grownups bring pasta and eggs, children bring canned goods. donations go to the new family welfare agency aiding families awaiting spring jobs.
In Pocatello a year old Bonnie Lee Fickes’ blonde cocker spaniel is stolen from 215 South Garfield after a Christmas Eve snow. The dog belonged to Lt. Donald Fickes’ daughter, with the father serving in the Berlin airlift. Mrs. Frankie Fickes seeks a reward, hoping the thief’s “better side” awakens.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Jones of 109 South Fisher Street Blackfoot celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a dinner party at the Hotel Bannock banquet room in Pocatello. Four generations will attend including sons LeRoy Leslie and Kenn and their families. Mrs. Jones was born May 24 1875 in Rockford Minnesota and Mr. Jones was born August 8 1877 near Windom Minnesota. They married December 28 1898 in Windom Minnesota.
Alameda police chief Earl J. Adkins was in a 5 30 p m collision at Oak Street and Pocatello Avenue with a car reportedly driven by Ray Hugh Vezina of 193 Washington Avenue. Adkins was en route to another accident when the crash occurred and the State Traffic Officer Wake man investigated.
In Greenland foul weather blocked an attempt to rescue 13 U S airmen atop a 7700 foot icecap. The Saipan ships from Norfolk sped toward Greenland with helicopters while a C 82 flying boxcar and later a ski equipped C 47 were planned for rescue. Ten airmen are named including James Prevost and Robert McDonald among others. Names of two others withheld due to family illness.
Sergeant John N. Bell re enlists in the army Monday at the Poca Tello recruiting station and leaves immediately for Fort Ord. He is the son of Joseph N. Bell of Pacific Grove, about six miles from his Fort Ord station in the Golden State.
An unidentified House member from southeastern Idaho says a bill to repeal the 1947 slot machine act would likely pass the House but die in Senate committee. The plan reportedly hinges on killing the repealer in committee if backers cannot maneuver it otherwise.
Maj. Gen. Sungkono, commander of the Indonesian republican army in east Java, orders guerrilla warfare against the Dutch. A clandestine radio broadcast reports swift hit and run raids along the rail line from Djatibarang to Cheribon.
Coroner W A Platt reports 19 month old David Chisholm died of alcohol poisoning on Christmas Eve. Police hold an unidentified friend of the family as the investigation continues.
A Pleasant Grove service station was robbed late Sunday night with the attendant knocked unconscious. Two men escaped with $60 from the till. This marked the second Utah county service station robbery in four days, prompting a statewide alarm.
Tom Smith was elected president of the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce at a Monday meeting. James Bowns Jr. was named vice president and Marguerite Holland was reappointed secretary. Smith is connected with Blackfoot Motor Co. Bowns runs a photo studio.
Funeral services for Bishop Arnold E. Reddish, killed in a Thursday automobile crash near Fort Hall, were led by Elder Evan E. Jones at the Sixth Ward LDS chapel. Large crowds filled the chapel and grounds as Delos Paxman, President Jared O. Anderson, and others spoke. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery with Charles B. McCurdy conducting.
Idaho schools will be up in the air over a contest sponsored by the state department of aeronautics. Chet Moulton, director, says the second Applied Air-Age Education in Idaho Schools contest will help the next generation of public officials understand the impact of the air age.
A light plane crashed during takeoff at Munich Airport killing Jay H. Leason, 47, and his wife Florence, 41, of Chicago. Authorities reported the accident occurred Monday as the aircraft failed to gain altitude, ending in tragedy for the couple.
A son was born Monday to Mr and Mrs Ford II at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
