Federal Judge Williams rules Anna Laura Lowe Barnett, widow of Creek oilman Jackson Barnett, receives no part of his estate. The $2 to $3 million wealth goes to three Creek Indian groups Connors Barnett Gouge Stepney and Rosa Fisher, excluding Barnett's wife who had previously faced kidnapping allegations.
Soviet land troops pushed inland over 80 miles toward central Finland while weather limited air activity. Izvestia hailed the USSR’s expulsion from the League of Nations as giving a free hand, and Pravda accused the United States of pressuring Latin American states to back the ouster.
Bellefonte Pennsylvania December 18 two Philadelphia men James Fuller age 25 and Fletcher Legrand age 22 were executed in the electric chair for fatally shooting a watchman during an attempted robbery. They refused the chaplain’s request to recite the Twenty Third Psalm.

Eight year old Dick Miller of Boise asked who made whom famous between Senator William Borah and Idaho potatoes. State ag commissioner E N Pettygrove forwarded the query to Governor Bottolfsen, who planned to refer it to Borah for a reply.
Western Republican leaders gather in Salt Lake City for a conference focused on organizing forces to oppose the New Deal. While urging talk of candidates be avoided, delegates were approached by a scout for possible presidential contenders and discussed campaign strategies.
German reports claim 34 British bombers were shot down in a large air engagement near Helgoland off the North German coast. Forty four British planes took part in the raid, with two German planes lost and crews parachuting. Wreckage of numerous British planes washed ashore.

London reports that the Arussa sank a 6,000-ton Koeln class cruiser believed to be near the Elbe estuary harbor city of Cuxhaven. The attack, thought to be tied to a prior torpedoing, left an uncertain death toll and was later denied by Berlin as an official British claim.
Washington reports an imminent agreement between the United States and Cuba to cut the tariff on Cuban sugar from $1.52 to 90 cents per hundredweight. The revised rate follows a period when Roosevelt lifted all sugar quotas amid wartime price rises.

In Buenos Aires on December 18 a high Argentine official said the 1039 Graf Spee crewmen would be interned after the German pocket battleship sank in the Plate river. Officers may be released on personal pledges not to participate in the European war. A German embassy spokesman provided comment.
Washington reports the Roosevelt administration rejected a British request last spring for a Reconstruction Finance Corp loan. Jesse H. Jones and others said such a loan was policy barred despite legal opinions. Britain sought security in American stocks and bonds and may sell British holdings as war debts shift.
Tokyo reports that Japan will reopen the Yangtze river below Nanking to third power commerce under military restrictions. The river, vital for central China trade, had been closed to foreign traffic since August 1937 after Japan's war began. A Shanghai spokesman cautioned the timing is uncertain. American business circles in Shanghai were not optimistic.
In rural Missouri a 60 year old Dr J R Vickery of Steele and a 35 year old woman were found dead by stabbing in a car north of New Madrid. Sheriff A F Stanley said the physician lay in the front seat and the woman in the trunk. both victims suffered multiple chest wounds and the doctor was struck in the face. Coroner L A Richards Jr estimated they had been dead 12 to 15 hours.
The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was scuttled in three minutes in Montevideo as Captain Hans Langsdorff and crew abandoned ship. Explosions and flames followed while British sailors watched from the Achilles. Over 1,000 lives were spared and the ship's secrets remain below.
London reports an official spokesman says the scuttling of the Admiral Graf Spee signals German leaders expect defeat in the war. If the ship had been interned Germany would keep it only if they prevail, but scuttling implies they foresee loss.
Pan American Airways marked the American Clipper on its 100th regular Atlantic crossing since service began May 20. The Clipper carried 18 passengers and 2,000 pounds of mail as part of four planes that have moved over 40 tons of mail and nearly 1,800 passengers to date, totaling 5,500,000 passenger miles and 300,000,000 mail-pound miles since May 20.
Helsinki dispatch reports Finnish field guns smashed Soviet attempts to breach the eastern flank of the Mannerheim line. A Finnish communique says 30 tanks destroyed Friday and Saturday, including three 30-ton "land battleships" amid snowbound terrain. Attacks north of Lake Ladoga repulsed. two Russian forces, about 10,000 men each, reportedly surrounded near Tolvajarvi and Suomussalmi.
The AAA announces 1940 farm benefit rules with higher acreage requirements for alfalfa legumes grasses and cover crops to obtain the same payment as 1939. Wheat payments drop to nine cents per bushel on normal yield. funds must cover wheat corn tobacco and rice amid rising participation.
