Lima Peru December AP reports Dr Alberto Salomon official said Peru would not accept Chilean plebiscite proposal on Tacna and Arica sovereignty. He stressed Peru’s firm stance aided by American and European sympathy and pledged energetic defense to safeguard territorial rights without disturbing continental peace.
Whitman College in Walla Walla credits coach R V Borleske with turning a 20 to 25 man football unit into an Northwest Conference champion eleven. He served as sole coach and athletic manager, handling business, gymnasiums, and student athletic participation, with about 90 percent of men active under his direction.
Vallejo Calif Dec 16 AP retirement papers issued to Campbell Whitthorne who served the U S government under every administration from Grant to Harding. His career began April 1 1875 as deputy collector of internal revenue in St Louis and included posts on the lighthouse board marine labor board and at Mare Island Navy Yard before serving as assistant appraiser in San Francisco during Wilson administration.
New York December 16 AP Several drafts for restoring the draft under conditions satisfactory to both minor and major leagues were considered by the baseball advisory council. One plan would have the major league club pay 5000 to replace a drafted player with a AA club player. Judge Landis carried through one idea a seven game world series.
Missonia December 14 AP reports new Wakout towers erected on commanding mountain tops in the Missoula national forest. Spectacular packing feats were needed to reach Graves and Wykies Peaks, two inaccessible lookout points. Forest Service bought two portable structures packed fifty and seventy five miles by animal and human power. Each structure weighed three and a quarter tons with sections two to twelve feet long.
The interstate commerce commission sustained reductions on grain grain products and hay in the Mississippi territory. The cuts average about sixteen and one half percent from 1920 rates and corn and other coarse grains will be ten percent cheaper than wheat. The order follows petitions from western states and agricultural groups. Railroads can seek further suspensions only via court order on appeal.
Reports from Buenos Aires describe an Andes volcano eruption believed to be Mount Rinhuu in Chile. Osorno, Union and San Pablo were heavily damaged by falling rocks as ash and hot debris blanketed grazing lands north of Lake Nahuel Huapi. Livestock faces starvation risk without transport out of the area. Further eruptions are feared.
The reparations commission met in Paris to consider Germany's note stating it cannot pay the January and February 200,000,000 gold mark installments and asking for more time. London dispatches report General Sir John Kevles, commander of British forces in Mesopotamia in 1916, died in France on Thursday after returning from Mesopotamia. His role helped end the siege and retreat from Baghdad.
A woodcut of Rev Henry Harmon Spaulding and a brass howitzer fragment from 1848 are donated to Whitman College Museum in Walla Walla. Spaulding joined the Whitman party in 1836 and later started a school at Lapwai Idaho. The howitzer piece came from the Keylor ranch near Whitman and is tied to the massacre of the Whitman party.
Anaconda Montana December 16 AP a club caddy trained a dog to dive for golf balls lost in a hazardous creek. The youth trainer Wat proudly reports the dog now carries balls gently like eggs, solving the long standing loss problem on one fairway.
William Fo Wendt a Buffalo and Los Angeles manufacturer was found incompetent to manage his affairs by a jury. The verdict followed testimony of his heavy whisky use three pints daily and a quart nightly along with eccentric behavior. Mrs Wendt and daughter Margaret plan to seek a county court appointment of a three member committee to handle his affairs.
Spug Myers of Pocatello stopped Frankie Reagan of Pueblo in the eleventh round. Ernest Welty of Midvale and Red Van Slyke of Twin Falls fought to a six round draw. Tuffy O Dow of Pocatello defeated Eddie Owens of Butte in four rounds. Reed Wardle and Russell Anderson drew in four rounds in the curtain raiser.
Spug Myers of Pocatello defeated Frankie Reagan of Pueblo Colorado by knockout in the eleventh round at the Auditorium theatre in what was billed as one of southern Idaho's fastest bouts. Reagan rose briefly but fell again as Myers dominated with stinging punches. The undercard featured a six round draw between Ernest Welty and Red Van Slyke and a four round decision for Tuffy O Dow over Eddie Owens, with Reed Wardle and Russell Anderson drawing in the curtain raiser.
Miss Steen Scorup, Salina high school English teacher, defeated her brother P C Scorup for mayor by fourteen votes. She plans roads and water improvements and says she did not seek the office, having campaigned for her brother instead.
London reports say Labour leader Arthur Kenderson urged acceptance of the peace pact with Ireland while Major Robert ONeill challenged boundary revisions without Ulster consent. Delegations including Sir James Craig and Colonel Spender arrived to press Ulster concerns as ratification looms in Dublin and Westminster.
