Reports from Madrid say insurgent tanks and infantry battered government lines in University City for two hours as defenders held. Evacuations total 60,000 noncombatants, with 30,000 children, over the past week amid a winter siege.
In San Francisco on December 14 the Sailors' union of the Pacific said progress toward settlement was the closest since the October 30 ship tie-up began. Harry Lundeberg claimed we are closer to a real agreement, while Harry Bridges flew toward New York to rally support for the strike. The maritime slowdown, now 46 days old, cost owners an estimated 31.75 million to 50 million dollars, idling 230 ships and affecting over 37,000 maritime workers nationwide. A separate licensee ship officers’ walkout followed by a national strike yielded a Houston settlement with the Sykes Lines on the gulf.
Investigators faced a mystery in the death of an unidentified woman whose mutilated body was found stuffed into two potato sacks in a wood at Dias Creek near Wildwood New Jersey. Coroner Benjamin Ingersoll said tests of burns were planned to help determine manner of death.

Bobby Anderson 10 son of Mr and Mrs Jack Anderson Preston remains in critical condition with concussion and internal injuries. Cars driven by William Andrea Preston and Milo Woolf Riverdale collided causing one car to strike the boys as they attempted to cross. Funeral plans for Johnny Brown are pending with Hendrick mortuary.
Governor Ross appoints Attorney General Bert H. Miller as state commissioner of labor immigration and statistics. Miller resigns as attorney general, J. W. Taylor named to succeed him. The post, created to fill a 15 year vacancy, carries a 3600 dollar salary for two years. Miller, former Fremont County prosecutor, served as attorney general since 1932.

Mather former Oregon Short Line railway medical staff member. Services for Dr. Laubaugh are Dec 16 at St Michael's Episcopal Cathedral and Dec 15 for Dr. Mather at Meeker funeral home.
