Administration lieutenants forecast presidential approval of the farm bill this week after favorable house votes defeating cotton quotas and corn controls. Senate support appears fragile with key amendments debated and a short session remaining.
Mayor Robert M. Terrell announced a petition for a temporary grade crossing at Connor street will be laid before Union Pacific officials. The Gould street viaduct work is suspended due to cold weather, creating an emergency crossing need as 11 UP tracks at Connor street complicate safe passage. C. A. Kelly says construction will resume next spring. Traffic uses Center or Halildaug tunnels or the single UP track west of the city.
Washington December 8 neutral group in congress plans to approach President Roosevelt in a cooperative spirit to discuss the Sino Japanese war and possible revision of the neutrality act. Senators Nye La Follette say the aim is equal treatment of all sides and clarity on policy and potential revisions.
Oregon Governor Charles H. Martin charges the National Labor Relations Board with impotence in settling inter organizational disputes delaying Oregon’s lumber industry and depriving workers of four months pay. He urges repeal of the Wagner Act and backs plant elections at Inman Poulsen Lumber Mill to resolve union jurisdiction.
Lorenzo Gonzales paid 10 dollars for leaving the scene of an auto crash and 2 50 for a stop sign violation. Alvie Nugent pled guilty to operating while intoxicated and was fined 100 dollars. Carl Holde received a 10 dollar suspended fine for improper license. Ellis Green was fined 10 dollars for petit larceny linked to a street bomb found on Ida ho street. Paul Crawley Jr. 19 remains in the army presidio guardhouse as his court martial verdict of six months with dishonorable discharge is reviewed. The original papers in President Andrew Johnsons impeachment, misplaced for 70 years, were found in the Capitol among old House records. Wrapped in brown paper and soot crusted, the documents are well preserved. Johnson was impeached by the House and acquitted by the Senate.
