Idaho will leave liquor import enforcement largely to local and federal officers. State Traffic Commissioner Emmitt Prost says his patrol of about twenty will aid traffic duties and arrest drivers for speeding or other violations if liquor is found. County and city officers enforce liquor laws. 3.2 percent alcohol permitted in beverages is allowed.
In Bathurst Gambia the Lindberghs postponed their South Atlantic crossing as the colossal monoplane sits becalmed at sunset. Heavy fuel loads and lack of headwinds hinder takeoff despite repeated attempts yesterday and last night. Mrs Lindbergh assisted Col Lindbergh while they waited for more favorable conditions.
Coroner says George Powell 58 of War Heights likely took his own life. Powell was found dead with a bullet wound to the head from an improvised weapon made from a rifle barrel and an automatic pistol magazine in Clarksburg West Virginia.
Mrs. C. E. Goranson of Poca sello is in Beck hospital with a serious scalp wound after a car skidded into the bridge railing on the Blackfoot river highway. Her husband Roland Gene and the young son Roland Gene were uninjured except for minor cuts. the couple’s car was demolished by the crash caused by snow, slick pavement, and a sharp turn. Mr. Goranson is a disbursing officer for the CWA in four eastern Idaho counties.
Molten lava surges from Mokuweewee crater at Mauna Loa summit in Hawaii. A three mile high view from an Interisland plane shows steam and fiery lava pouring across the plateau. No danger yet but residents on lower slopes alerted to move if needed. Reflected glow blankets clouds as coast guard ship approaches from Honolulu. Continued on Page 8.
Ernest Hobbs 39 of St. Anthony died after being struck by a gravel truck at Teton while signaling traffic. Four members of the John P. Thomas family of Malad were injured when their car slid on icy pavement two miles north of Shelley and collided with a southbound Union Pacific bus.
Dr. Alice Wynekoop faces trial for the murder of her daughter in law Rheta with January 4 set as the date. Judge Joseph B. David warned against bond release as the 62 year old woman remains jailed and ill. Earle Wynekoop, her son in law, awaits arraignment next Monday on an accessory to murder charge.
Santa Monica, December 4. Will Rogers shares a breezy, personal note about public figures and modern society while lamenting the loss of his dog after being hit by a truck. He expresses humor and frustration with current affairs and politics in a casual, folksy voice.
Government gold buying enters sixth week with peak price of 34.01 an ounce. The dollar shows new strength abroad, opening London at 5.194 per pound and rising to 5.06 by day’s end. Morgenthau to announce last week’s treasury bond purchases. RFC boosted domestic gold by 25 cents last week.
Four Great Northern railroad workers were killed and two injured when a freight train derailed after hitting a rock slide at Milan Washington, 24 miles north of Spokane. The dead were engineer W. J. Barrett fireman William Krueger brakemen Leonard Hargrove and J. T. Towhey. The injured were conductor E. W. Horsall and brakeman F. G. Cook. The crew, from Hillyard, were riding in the locomotive cab pulling a 97 car train whose weight tipped the engine and tender into the Little Spokane river.
Secretary Ickes defended the New Deal programs by citing 2,993,360 employed under works allotments as of November 25. He noted 347,623 in the civilian conservation corps and 1,183,267 under the civil works administration, with most of the $35.5 billion fund allotted and withdrawals not announced.
