New Orleans reports the death of Senator Theodore G Bilbo of Mississippi at 69. The controversial figure, facing bi partisan charges of unfitness and alleged intimidation in campaigns, died after a series of illnesses including cancer and vascular complications. The fate of his disputed Senate seat remains unresolved.
Britain delivers an ultimatum to 4400 Jewish refugees aboard three ships off Marseille to disembark by tomorrow or be transported to Germany. A Hamburg refugee spokesman says they would be sent to Bergen Belsen unless they yield, while Jewish leaders call the move a crime against humanity and consider hunger strikes.
Miss Sarah Van Wormer of Pocatello and her niece Ann Van Wormer will move on Saturday to Glendale near Amsterdam New York to start new lives. Sarah, a former Salt Lake City teacher and Berlin trained musician, has long lived with Judge D W Standrod family in Pocatello. Ann plans to pursue newspaper work in New York.
John Cobb in his 24 cylinder speedster recorded 334.26 miles per hour on the measured mile at Bonneville Salt Flats Utah. He did not pursue a world speed record today, as a crosswind affected his first run and intensified during the session.
Bands of night raiders blamed on radical Doukhobors burn over twenty homes farms and schools near Nelson British Columbia. One reported raider is a nude woman as Doukhobors seek police and Ottawa aid while police refuse to disclose details.
Local officers deny a circulating rumor that a 1946 or 1947 Buick is held by police with a dead body inside and that authorities plan to sell it for a small sum. They say the tale is untrue though residents continue to call about the alleged vehicle. Reports reach Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City police as well.

A tornado struck near White Tail Montana demolishing farm buildings and destroying wheat in a two mile wide path. A cloudburst washed topsoil from fields and flooded roads in northeastern Montana near the Canadian and North Dakota borders.
Mrs Waagen 22 and her 14 year old daughter Barbara Lyon were electrocuted when a table model radio fell into a bathtub during a bath. The baby likely drowned or was electrocuted. Neighbors heard screams as the incident occurred. In Utah William Young 38 a Moon Lake Electric lineman died after touching a 7200 volt line while on a pole near LaPoint.
National Cincinnati defeated Brooklyn 9 8 in a night game with key hits by King and Edwards. Chicago beat Boston 7 2 in a late game. St Louis routed Philadelphia 25 4 as Munger and Rice led the offense. Pittsburgh-New York played a night game while Washington faced Detroit and Boston met Chicago in other scheduled matches.

A car used in the Rio Tinto kidnapping was found abandoned in sagebrush 20 miles northwest of Mountain Home Idaho. Victims Dale Inbody and two miners described a gunman named Pete as 6 feet 4 inches tall with two revolvers and a rifle matching weapons taken from a Rio Tinto pool hall.
Police dispute an earlier Tribune report that Eugene H. Moore was involved in the hit-and-run that injured Archie Noble. Moore, living at 655 West Center, had a separate reckless driving citation after skidding 144 feet at Main and Halliday. Investigators say no connection exists between that incident and the Sunday crash. Leonard Hopkins also stated Moore was not involved with Noble’s bicycle collision.
Mark Manley, Bannock County assessor, announced motor vehicle license receipts reached 96047 by August 1 this year, up from 83576 same period last year. Through this date 8619 passenger car licenses, 845 private trucks, 1089 farm trucks, and 192 commercial trucks were issued.

The Associated Press reports a sharp week for infantile paralysis with 32 states showing increases yet the year’s total remains the lowest since 1942. Death figures from 20 states total 30, far below 338 a year earlier, while the U S Public Health Service logs 2 664 cases for 1947 by August 16 compared with 8 841 in 1946.
Salt Lake City police charged Ray A. Jones a bartender with child neglect after neighbors reported four children left uncared for and unfed since Tuesday. Judge Frank E. Moss fined Jones 100 dollars and sentenced him to 30 days in jail with 25 days suspended on payment of the fine. Jerry 11 months old had only a bottle of sour milk and chickenpox. others ate scraps from grocery trips. The mother Bernice Jones was held for questioning.
Bannock county assessed value is expected to rise by at least one million dollars over 1946 levels according to county assessor Mark Manley. He cites a first abstract of the tax rolls showing an overall gain despite a roughly 440 thousand dollar loss from secession of the southeast into Franklin county. Increases appear in improvements about 247 thousand dollars, merchandise 646 thousand dollars, with the remainder in farm and other machinery furniture and fixtures.

Stubby the Blackfoot dog, a familiar downtown sight and canine celebrity for a decade, was killed Tuesday when an unidentified motorist struck him at a street intersection. His owner, Dave Pike, a longtime Blackfoot janitor, said he is deeply heartbroken and not seeking details on burial.
