Washington outlines new orders from the War Manpower Commission to keep essential war workers in pivotal roles and move others from nonessential jobs. It expands nondeferrable lists, prioritizes critical occupations, and may steer kept workers toward service without halting production.
The Italian government announced that Rome would be declared an open city as a result of repeated American air raids. The move, communicated via the Vatican, requires demilitarization steps and international law actions before Rome is removed from allied military targets.
President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill announced that more than 90 U boats were sunk during May to July as Allied forces advance. They warned German undersea raiders remain and stressed continued, improved efforts to protect Europe’s supply lines amid Sicily operations and reinforcements.

Harry H. Wilson, manager of Fargo-Wilson Wells, underwent surgery Friday at Mayo Hospital in Rochester Minnesota and was reported in a serious condition Saturday. Chester G. Wells, a business associate, relayed the update. Wilson had been hospitalized at St Anthony and was sent home before a later deterioration prompted the trip east.
RAF bombers struck Turin Milan and surrounding areas in a major attack. Travelers say Milan residents rushed to leave the city as fire and water shortages hindered relief efforts and a department store collapsed.
