Washington dispatches say President Roosevelt will call Congress into an early November extra session to pass Cuban reciprocity legislation after the elections. The move aims to reduce opposition and shape the campaign for both parties.
President Roosevelt appoints Oliver Wendell Holmes of Massachusetts to the U S Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Gray. Gray resigns due to ill health after a stroke, ending a 21 year tenure. Holmes, a respected jurist and son of the poet, is set to be confirmed, with Gray’s successor not taking the bench until after Senate approval.
The consolidation of the National and American leagues into a twelve club circuit is well under way. After the season ends a conference will be held to vote on creating a single organization.
In Parkersburg West Virginia Judge Jackson releases Thomas Haggerty and six other United Mine Workers jailed for 60 to 90 days for contempt of court. The men had filed petitions claiming they did not know their actions violated the injunction and promised not to repeat them. Coal company attorneys opposed the release noting rearrest if they violate again.
Washington August 12 the commissioner of pensions says many ex confederate soldiers misread the act relieving disabilities for having served in the confederate army. The law does not pension ex confederates. it only removes disabilities for those pressed into confederate service who later joined the Union army.

Edison predicts railways will abandon steam locomotives within thirty years in favor of electric motors and electric automobiles will largely replace horses. Fires rage along the Cascade mountains near the Columbia River with millions of feet of timber burning. A major blaze at Multnomah Falls east of Portland covers extensive ground with smoke darkening the city. Additional fires line the Washington shore and extend into eastern timber belts. Campers reportedly started most blazes and a stubborn fire burns south of Milwaukee in small timber.
Eight prominent cattlemen in Western Oklahoma were arrested by the U S attorney on charges of conspiring to defeat homesteaders rights. Accused actions include driving away and killing stock, ambushing owners, burning homes, and destroying crops and lands during a government pasture dispute.
Advices from Chiangeville indicate anti-Hunt forces will control Idaho county convention, meeting August 15. Grangeville precinct Moore faction allied with Haunt won 30 of 180 votes. outside reports show similar anti-Hunt majorities. Delegation likely to back Martin or be composed of his friends. Chicago detectives revisited theories on the Mitchell Bartholin murders as they offer rewards for the suspect Wm J Bartholin. Police questioned arrests in nearby towns but could not prove any match to the killer. Investigators drilled through the Bartholin residence basement amid crowds and heightened curiosity.
Silverton August 12 The mine owners association with twenty San Juan county miners and the miners union with over a thousand members have issued wage schedules to start August 15. A clear clash exists and unless a compromise is reached the mines will close on that date. Both sides are reportedly taking a firm position.
Harry A Faulkner, an alderman recently convicted of perjury in street railway bribery cases, received a two year penitentiary sentence. He appealed to the supreme court and was released on a ten thousand dollar bond pending the hearing.
