Washington reports the Allied powers encircling Japan as Russia joins the war, shortening the conflict even as Tokyo faces intensified pressure. The White House and State Department push for Japan to surrender while OWI amplifies propaganda after President Truman announced the Soviet declaration.

Washington reports the atomic bomb project remains the nation’s top manpower priority. From January 1943 to June 1945 selective service deferred 5500 workers for Manhattan Engineer District roles. By August 1 the voluntary deferments fell to 4500, yet the War Department kept the project at number one for deferments.
Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet returns to waters off north Honshu launching more than 1200 carrier planes. Japanese air opposition is suppressed as ships report planes set afire on the ground, two vessels sunk, and several damaged. Surface units also shell Kamaishi as Nimitz pledges naval aid to Russia.

The U S public roads administration Idaho district office opened today under district engineer L M Higgins. The office moved from Ogden Utah when Utah and Idaho formed separate PRA districts. He aims to lease or buy Geneva and form a syndicate, while U S Steel shifts to cold reduction with over 325 000 tons annual capacity at Columbia plant. Kaiser asserts Pittsburg expansion won t weaken his western steel project.
A skunk named Pay Fly Away, mascot of Sgt. George Benesch's Pueblo, Colorado crew, became the first casualty of the Eighth Air Force en route to Okinawa after wandering away at Pratt Kansas. The crew joked about renaming their plane Little Stinker. A spitz puppy owned by Sgt. Ralph Tesch of Excelsior, Minnesota, was promoted to chief mascot.

Idaho workers and families receive 3319 monthly payments under the federal old age and survivors insurance plan. J F Mellinger of the social security board reports 1721 are workers and spouses over 65 and 1584 are widows or dependents. Some payments go to families of service members who died in service, if they worked under social security before military service. Mellinger notes about 1000 Idaho workers over 65 remain on the job without inquiring about benefits and urges visits to social security offices in Boise Pocatello Twin Falls Spokane or Lewiston. He stresses that a family member must file for benefits upon the worker's death. benefits are not automatic.
President Truman will address the nation in a half hour broadcast at 8 o clock mountain war time. The talk was to cover Potsdam and the atomic bomb but is now expected to include Russia's declaration of war on Japan.
