Washington reports that President Taft will veto the New Mexico Arizona statehood measure but Democratic leaders say they can muster enough votes to override. TheNelson amendment requiring Arizona recall of judges failed, leaving the bill as approved by the Senate.
In Washington on August 9 the house committee on expenditures in the agricultural department heatedly examined Solicitor McCabe as charges were raised that technical questions were used to hold back evidence in the Dr. Wiley investigation.
The Lorimer committee adjourned hearings in Washington and will reconvene likely in October in Chicago by Chairman Dillingham. Attorney Healy said the witness list had been exhausted and “everybody else” remains.
Paris reports the death of John W. Gates, the American financier, after a long illness. The news draws widespread expressions of regret from his business peers and acquaintances who admired his bold success and courageous battle with illness.
Judge Walter Bordwell said he has received threatening letters connected to the McNamara brothers murder conspiracy case set for October 11. He declined to reveal contents but told Lecompte Davis he could stop the threats.

Mrs E H Harriman widow of the railroad wizard arrived in San Francisco for a social visit. A clash over right of way with a baseball fans’ train near Sparks delayed the Harriman car by about an hour before departure. Railroad men report Mrs Harriman accepted the decision good naturedly.
Chicago August 9 unions threaten a national railroad strike in the west. Julius Kruttschnitt vice president of Union Pacific and Southern Pacific cites demands that would add about 50 million dollars a year in costs. Rail workers seek eight hour day union foremen and higher pay, but management has rejected the demands.
Locally a strike on Harriman lines is not expected though union formations aim to create a central committee for car, shop, blacksmith and machinist workers. Officials estimate proposed wage and hour changes would add millions yearly to western lines, with potential widespread action if wage limits persist.
The West Virginia Dental Association began its annual convention in Clarksburg with many leading professionals from across the state in attendance. Sessions will span two days and close with a banquet tomorrow night.
A picked Canadian Artillery association team of twelve officers and forty other ranks sailed on the Royal George for England to compete in events at the Salisbury Plain starting August 25.
