Solons Suspend Spy Investigation Details Revealed

US congressmen disclose shipments of uranium to the Soviet Union during wartime. Rep. McDowell says 2720 pounds of uranium compounds in 1943 and 25 pounds of uranium metal in 1945 were sent to Col. Kotikov to appease the Soviets and aid atomic research. The hearings also implicate a communist spy ring reaching high into government.

Idaho Men Register in September

Governor Robins issued a proclamation calling Idaho men ages 18 to 23 to register from August 30 to September 19. Officials estimate about 25 000 Idahoans may be eligible with 750 contributing annually to the draft based on national projections. Registration is simple, requiring only name and address, and employers are asked to provide workers time off.

Trails Groups Meet Today for Pioneer Trails Event

Trekkers honoring the Oregon Territory Centennial arrive in Pocatello Saturday led by Howard Driggs of Salt Lake City. The Pocatello unit will host a 12:15 p.m. luncheon at the Bannock hotel. The group then heads to Baker for a round up and a monument dedication before moving to Portland for the summer convention and Oregon Territory centennial celebration.

Residence dispute clouds Pocatello assessor candidate

Friends of William Lasley say rumors claim he is not a Pocatello resident. Lasley, a Grace native, has lived in Pocatello for seven years and previously resided there two years before his state brand inspector appointment. He and his wife reside at 211 North Hayes.

Paul Robeson led several hundred Civil Rights Congress pickets on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House. More than 2,000 CR Congress members traveled from New York on two special trains, with some proceeding to Capitol Hill.

Pioneer Group Visits Pocatello to Celebrate Oregon Trail Centennial

The American Pioneer Trails association plans a trek through Pocatello on August 7 as part of Oregon Trail centennial events. Idaho chapter leaders push for a monument near American Falls to honor pioneer cattle industry history and the Oregon Trail legacy. Dr. Howard R. Driggs will lead the delegation and dedicate monuments in Wyoming and Star Valley.

Police to receive university credits for state police school

Boise report states thirty eight members of the state police will gain two semester credits at the University of Idaho for attending the state police school in May. Superintendent Alton P Bunderson said the patrolmen will earn credit for a course titled science of law enforcement.

Youth Crump Found Dead in Lava Hot Springs Home

Denzil Leon Crump, 10, son of Leo and Gwendlyn Crump, died from a single bullet wound to the forehead Friday afternoon in Lava Hot Springs. He was found alone in a McCammon area bedroom and died about 10 minutes after being taken to the Lava hospital. He was born September 26, 1938, in McCammon and attended school there as a fourth grader. Survivors include his parents, a brother Theodore, sisters Janice and Jean, grandparents Henry Crump and Robin, and Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Park of Orem Utah. Funeral arrangements to be handled by Arthur W. Hall mortuary.

Soviets Charge U S Planes Violated Berlin Flight Rules

The Soviet news agency accused British and American aircraft of 62 flight-rule violations over five days from July 31 to August 4, including low-level incursions over Soviet airports and towns. Burley Man Faces Desertion Charge With Embezzlement Allegation

Howard Dean of Burley, 30, is charged with wife and child desertion and is wanted on an embezzlement count. Mrs. Dean and three children live in Pocatello. He is described as 6'2" tall, 185 pounds with a ruddy complexion black hair hazel eyes and a small mustache. He was last seen driving a light tan 1939 Oldsmobile sedan, with a Burley woman.

State highway department spokesman said bids were opened on seven projects across the state by Priday. No contracts have been awarded yet.

Caretaker Perishes in Butler County Fair Barn Fire

A 179 year old caretaker Lou Patton died in a blaze that destroyed a large barn at Butler county fairgrounds. Patton’s body was found among the ruins after firefighters quit. Four horses owned by A J Richards of Butler, president of the fair association, perished. Richards estimated losses at 30000 dollars.

New Iron Lung Demonstrated for Polio Victims in Michigan

In Ann Arbor a new light weight iron lung style respirator was shown by Dr. Dorman E. Lichty. The plexiglass device fits over the chest and abdomen, weighs three to five pounds, and operates with a single pump mechanism. It has been used successfully at the University of Michigan Contagious Hospital, with one patient living in the device for two and a half years.

Coroner Jury Reports Fractured Skull in Cornfield Inquest

A coroner jury in Pocatello found Leonard Cornfield of Cornfield stop near Ganado Arizona died from head injuries after a weekend fracas with police. The inquest on Friday established his identity and death date of August 1, 1948. The 11 member panel heard testimony from police and witnesses amid alleged confusion among Indians involved that night.

Grace resident Lowe seeks Democratic nomination for third term

Mathias W. Lowe a prominent Grace resident and two term Idaho state legislator visited Pocatello Friday to meet constituents. A former member of Carpenters Local 2254 he supported bills in the last session for creating Idaho College and improving teacher and utility pensions.
