New York Aug 5 AP Tex Rickard declared that if Jack Dempsey fights Harry Wills for the world heavyweight title in 1926 the bout will be staged under his direction in the Metropolitan district likely on July 3 or 5. He warned against western promoters and said New York agreement with Wills’ manager Paddy Mullins stands. He would move to Jersey City Bowles Thirty Acres if needed and said Dempsey wants to meet Wills first.

Freyberg Fails In English Channel Swim Attempt
Lieutenant Colonel Bernard C. Freyberg, WWI hero and Victoria Cross recipient, failed to complete his English Channel swim after about seventeen hours. He neared the English coast within 600 yards near Point Hope between Dover and South Foreland, but quit near Cape Gris-Nez at 8:25 p.m. and was picked up by a tug. The goal was to beat Tiraboccho’s sixteen hours thirty three minutes record set two years earlier.
