In Brownsville Pa 35000 soft coal miners await Washington word to return to work after talks with union leaders. Picketing will continue as 10 mines are targeted under Pinchot MoMEyer accord while nation reacts to strikes and broader labor unrest. Louis Podorsky burial planned with large funeral procession.
Idaho accelerates New Deal changes with about 8 million dollars approved for highways and over 25 million tentatively approved for reclamation and related projects. Workers face a 30 hour week under public works standards while industries adopt blanket or specific codes. Governor Ross to decide on state employee hours aligning with the program.
Cherry Creek flowed calmly today after a torrent that killed two and caused damage possibly over a million dollars. Castlewood dam near Castle Rock collapsed after a cloud burst. Bridges and the Country Club area suffered, with $950,000 of damage to farmers along the creek. Logs and debris clogged streets and Union Station was visited by a log in the waiting room. Generally fair tonight and warmer in the southwest.
Gov. James Rolph reprieved Joseph Francis Regan in California. The stay until Sept. 15 follows Los Angeles Bar Association requests for time to submit a supplemental report on alleged jury irregularities in the trial for the Westwood theater slaying of Officer Hugh Crowley. The case of Jack D. Green, to be reviewed, rests on affidavits claiming jury foreman hinted Green was a Chicago gangster.
Pocatello American Legion Junior team defeated Parma 14 to 10 to claim the Idaho state championship. MacDonald and Black pitched for Pocatello. Knowles and Cooper caught. The victory earns a spot in the regional tournament in Pocatello August 18 and 19 joining Idaho Oregon Washington and Montana champions.
Five police cars responded to a disturbance call in Kansas City. Potent with a straw hat and cigar the man, identified as David Friesen aged 37 from Boise Idaho, strolled disrobed and hoped to land in jail. He was dressed and jailed after being questioned.
Mahatma Gandhi was arrested in Poona and sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment for defying government orders and continuing political activities. He asked to be placed with the lowest prisoners, saying he resisted an unjust system in a peaceful manner. He was moved to Yeroda jail from Ahmedabad with his wife and 33 followers during a planned individual disobedience act.
The Pocatello branch of the National Biscuit Company signed the NRA pledge in line with company policy. Local manager G F Driscoll announced two new employees will be added at the plant.
The state auditor releases a report covering the first half of the biennium. Total estimated revenue from all sources was 4,315,611 with 23.8 percent of non ad valorem revenue collected. A balance of 3,856,685 remains to come in including 1,468,385 from other sources and 2,388,289 in ad valorem taxes. Expenditures for the quarter ending July 1 totaled 1,014,828, or 23.52 percent of the 25 percent allotment.
Executive dean John R. Dyer of the University of Idaho Southern Branch and his wife and two of their three children were seriously injured in a car crash near Rhame North Dakota. The family was en route from Minneapolis to Packtell o where they had been visiting Dyer’s sister. Details were sparse with only the report “bad accident, all hurt.”
George T. Cobbler president of the Idaho Beet Growers association left Wednesday to attend a conference of sugar officials in Chicago Friday and Saturday. Beet cane and corn sugar officials will discuss the NBA program and its application to the sugar industry. Later he will go to Washington DC for further sugar matters.

He warned recalcitrant groups will face the act’s teeth though aims to avoid compulsion. Separate codes for small chain stores were rejected as unsafe.
Washington officials said they clarified publishers' position under the president's reemployment agreement to ease entry. A Thursday ruling allows publishers with contracts for fixed hours to continue if not open to modification. If hours are defined, 48 hours may stand. if only hourly rates exist, a 35 hour week with pay readjustment may apply. Newsboys and news carriers face latitude on 7 am limits. publishers decide on news staff under a week limit.
Beverly Hills writer Will Rogers jokes about a proposed state income tax, predicting millionaires may relocate east to dodge it. He ribbed farmers and businesses facing losses, then quips about millionaires leaving and readers “feed ’em and take care of ’em” as they pass through towns.
Mr and Mrs Paul Birgin announce the birth of a son on August 1. Dean Nelson assisted with the announcement.
Mrs Elizabeth Peake 83 died at her home Wednesday. Services set for 2 p m Sunday at First Congregational Church with Rev Claude Richmond. Born in Lancaster England she moved with family to Eagle Rock then Idaho Falls before settling in Pocatello. Interment Mountainview cemetery.
The Dun and Bradstreet Review reports continued uptrend in business last week with gains across wholesale and retail sectors. Retail inventories remain below normal, but inroads into holdings will allow fuller shipments. some retailers are turning profitable for the first time in over two years as high priced autos and low priced leaders show stronger demand. The blanket code is expected to boost fall buying, while demand broadens to office supplies and typewriters.
The 63 year old Mrs. J B Bistline of Pocatello was killed near Ventura California when a car driven by her 17 year old grandson Claude Bistline crashed into a parked state highway department truck. Her son Claude was injured but released from hospital. The body will be shipped to Pocatello for burial with date to be announced. Mrs Bistline was born in Paris Ohio in 1870 and had lived in Grand Island Nebraska Kansas and Pocatello. She leaves husband J B Bistline two sons Claude and Jean Bistline a daughter Ida M Bistline and two brothers.
