A series of strong quakes rattled California from Los Alamos to Santa Barbara with widespread cracking and road closures. Reports from Los Alamos appear overstated, while Santa Barbara observed severe shocks and uninhabitable homes. Civil authorities and Governor Stone dispatch National Guard to restore order amid coal region unrest and miner protests.
Boston August 1 Willard Vanderlip a renowned lawyer who managed the estate of the late George B Emerson for sixteen years is charged with embezzlement. Authorities say sums ranging from about 100000 to 200000 disappeared. Vanderlip arraigned on larceny of bonds valued at 4000000 and held in 8000 bonds. He has served as confidential agent for many law firms and is active in Elk and Mason orders.
A huge sequoia or similar giant tree was discovered high in the Sierras in Fresno County. It stands six feet across at ground level and has a trunk about 14 feet around, yielding a diameter over 51 feet. The tree sits on a government reserve and is protected from logging.
At three Lewiston precinct mass meetings on July 31 nominees for the primaries were selected. All nominees are strong anti-funt men and are expected to win the convention without opposition according to the Statesman special.
London reports Colonel Arthur Lynch national member of parliament was brought to Bow Street police court and committed for trial on high treason accusations. Des Moines August 1 Governor Cummings says he will examine Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway authority to incorporate under Iowa law. If violations are found he will order the attorney general to seek nullification of yesterday’s incorporation papers.
Edmond Barton, premier of Australia, told a deputation led by Lady Henry Somerset that the outlook for woman suffrage was excellent across the commonwealth. He cited success in four of six states and predicted adoption nationwide in the federation.
Henningsvasg Norway reports Arctic explorer Evelyn Baldwin arrived today with all crew members in good health. He said they had been battered but not beaten during the expedition.
