Washington AP reports the Rules Committee approved a resolution to investigate the government's seizure of Montgomery Ward & Co.'s Chicago plant and sent it to the House floor for consideration. The move signals forthcoming congressional scrutiny of the seizure action.
Montgomery Ward and Company shareholders backed board chairman Sewell Avery in a drive against federal seizure of Chicago facilities. Avery and 12 directors were re elected as the struggle with government control escalated. A House Rules Committee move sought a general inquiry into the seizure with bipartisan support.
Gen Douglas MacArthur labeled the five day siege of Hollandia in Dutch New Guinea complete with minimal enemy resistance. Allied reports say 3 airfields seized and Alexishafen fell while 51,000 Japanese are believed trapped near Aitape.

Idaho Falls Lions adopted a resolution denouncing the burning of 2700 jars of peanut butter at the city dump last Saturday. They sent copies to Idaho congressional leaders to John A. The action followed a federal court order after FDA inspectors found the peanut butter 34 of an ounce underweight though product quality was not at issue.
The last of six crew members stranded after parachuting from a falling bomber Sunday night were returned to Mountain Home Army Air Field. Three men severely exhausted and exposed after three days surviving on wild onions and snow water were flown in, while two others came back by army vehicles.

Caldwell police credited with assisting as officers aided a dog giving birth to five puppies under a front porch. The dogs then were housed with help to find suitable homes for the litter.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, 70, died at his Washington home from a heart attack after a week of illness. Acting Secretary James V. Forrestal announced the death to the Navy. Knox had served since July 1940 and aided American preparedness before and during World War II. He collapsed while preparing for bed Tuesday afternoon after returning from a funeral in Manchester New Hampshire.
SACRAMENTO Calif four Lt R B McCreadie of the Los Angeles police said Pvt Merlin J Smith 20 Nampa Idaho and Seaman William N Dorman 25 Madisonville Tex confessed they killed Ralph William Bigelow a north Hollywood machinist. They will be returned to Los Angeles on murder warrants. They said they robbed him and stole his car after being entertained at his home. Bigelow was struck on the head and his body thrown off a cliff in Los Angeles County.
London reports the Russian army pressing a determined offensive with tank support north of Iasi as fierce battles rage for a second day. A Bucharest broadcast cites sealed penetrations by counter-attacks, while a Soviet communique notes German casualties southeast of Stanislawow.
Congress recessed after learning of Secretary Knox death. Senate Majority Leader Barkley called Knox’s passing a deplorable loss and praised his magnificent service under the president with senate approval. Democratic Whip Ramspeck pledged Knox’s great A merican citizen service in these trying hours.
Dr. Arthur A. West aged 72 a pioneer Pocatello chiropractor died at his home 347 South Grant after a two week illness. Born in England he had lived in Pocatello since 1903. He is survived by his widow Alice and eight children including Mrs. Harold C. Hinckley Mrs. John A. Orme Dr. Henry G. West Mrs. Harold Webster Mrs. Clarence Pack Blackfoot Mrs. Ash Henderson Dr. Arthur D. West and Miss Ruby West Funeral services will be announced later.

Berlin dispatches say invasion could be within two weeks as Germany threatens Zuider Zee dykes to flood Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Sweden resumes Denmark mail as travel restrictions ease and German torpedo boats claim sinking three British ships off the English south coast.
A fire in a naval ship’s hold at the Norfolk Navy Yard killed 15 civilian workers from Portsmouth and Norfolk and injured about 20 others. The blaze began around 6 20 p m and forced rapid evacuations as smoke and fumes overwhelmed the crew. Navy officials praised rescue efforts and chaplains notified families of the dead.
