Across southern Georgia and nearby states rescue crews work amid widespread destruction after Thursday storms. At least 52 fatalities are confirmed with hundreds injured and many homeless. Red Cross stations open as relief funds appeal to citizens and Congress to fund ongoing aid.
Idaho Finance Commissioner E W Porter argues banks should not be taxed more due to large profits. The review of earnings for year ending June 2, 1978 shows dividends at 56 percent of gross, taxes at 6.1, and total earnings of 6.14 million. Porter warns the banking business is not excessively profitable and calls for study of stockholder margins.
Washington April 27 Administration leaders say the farm relief debenture plan faces defeat by a small margin in a Senate vote. They expect a near-term vote with likely passage unlikely before next week. Senator Nye indicated opposition, warning against subsidies while Senator Frazier backs the plan.
President Hoover, after fishing near his preserve in Catoctin Furnace Maryland, returned to Washington late tonight. He traveled with Mrs Moorer secretary Lawrence Richey and Mrs Richey, evading White House reporters, and began fishing soon after arrival, landing a fine one and a half pound trout.

Yorkshire April 24 Sir Austen Clamberlath British foreign secretary told an open air meeting Britain fully supports the American pronouncement favoring arms reduction and praised the United States stance on trained reserves as a step toward global disarmament He noted the U S position mirrors Britain’s earlier policy and lauded Mr Jibson’s recent statement on not insisting on trained reserves in the draft treaty as a notable contribution to solving leadership and naval reduction issues.
William M. Jardine former secretary of agriculture told fruit and vegetable growers that advertising and distribution are the keys to modern farming. He forecast a nationwide farmers cooperative marketing system worth about 5.06 billion dollars, modeled after the Federated Fruit and Vegetable Growers, with centralized units to equalize shipments and push perishables through strong advertising and sales programs.
Salt Lake City residents David Bo Moench and Arthur Ponda face involuntary manslaughter charges after their vehicles were involved in two fatal accidents this week. County Attorney John D. Rice announced the actions. Ponda struck and killed 6 year old Dewayne Ferre while Moench drove the other car that fatally injured Mrs. Amy Orgill.

Gordon B. Davis sues Salt Lake City for 7000 damages claiming negligence in maintaining the Thirteenth South Street canal led to 5 year old Donald Davis’s drowning on April 29 1928 near a conduit opening feeding the Jordan River. The complaint states the boy was drawn into the conduit and drowned.
The British steamship Inchcairnie was reported drifting helplessly on the Atlantic about 500 miles east of Bermuda and 1,900 miles southeast of Hampton Roads with no coal or food for the crew. No coast guard vessel will be sent from Norfolk Division, and the distress message will be broadened. The Inchcairnie last left Plymouth on March 27 for Pensacola and New Zealand.
Miss Anne Morrow Lindbergh arrives in San Antonio secretively en route from Mexico City to New York. She travels in a private car guarded by Department of Justice agents with her mother Mrs Dwight Morrow and other relatives aboard.
April 27 report from New York says an airplane crashed into a tree during landing near Curtissfield, killing Thomas J. Flannigan. Pilot Frank Hughes of Newark, N J, was injured but expected to recover, and he was arrested at a hospital on homicide charges after admitting no photo license and failing to switch off before the crash.
In Baton Rouge on April 7 Governor Huey P Long was formally served with impeachment charges voted by the house. He is directed to appear before the senate at noon May 14 for trial. The case accuses misuse of about $2000 of $6000 allotted for entertaining visiting governors and alleges attempts to bribe legislators and suppress the press.
