The paper states support for Mr. Stowell citing more experience in business and administration. It notes 2,336 votes in favor out of 5,053 total and wishes Dr. Davis and Mr. Carmack success as councilmen.
The Tribune extends congratulations to W. W. Halsey on victory as Pocatello mayor. The new administration faces school, highway, sewage, housing, and hospital needs, plus slum clearance and parks. Atomic project arrival adds responsibility. voter turnout was record high.
In Idaho, Halsey voters elected Mayor John Hosman by a three to one margin while Jerome re elected Hosman. Other cities Burley Caldwell Nampa Koshone rejected slot machines in advisory or local measures as results showed broad opposition to gambling devices.
In Brooklyn, 33 year old Paul Makushak emerged from a three by five foot plaster and wood cubicle built by his mother during World War I. Police reported he lived there since 1939, fed through a hole in the top, and was unaware of much of the outside world. He was taken to a hospital and his mother was hospitalized separately as officers removed the concealed cell.
The trial of Harrison Baker on a deadly weapon assault charge was postponed after he failed to appear in court. Nine witnesses including police and county attorney were present. the case was rescheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. on the misdated turnout issue.
Sheriff Alma Marley received a complaint from William H. Read of Home Improvement Co about a break in to a truck parked near Laabs Motel on N Main St. A hydraulic jack valued at 15 dollars and a set of reflector type flare valued at 14 dollars were stolen. Read cannot confirm when the theft occurred.
A head on collision on Highway 191 near the Bringhurst store Tyhee cross road ten miles north of Pocatello injured Fred Rich 40 and Michael Rich 4 Idaho Falls and Mrs Mabel Nielsen 48 of Pocatello The Rich sedan left the road into a water filled borrow pit about 20 feet below The three injured were taken to General hospital with non life threatening injuries and were released after first aid.
Trial of Lloyd Cummings a former railway mailman against Union Pacific neared noon today in district court before Judge Isaac McDougall. Cummings seeks 50000 dollars for alleged permanent injuries from a February 1948 train collision caused by an open switch.
Chiang Kai-shek warned that losing China could trigger a third world war, calling the country a tinderbox and vowing to share hardship as Kuomintang leader. He urged continued anti communist resistance and predicted victory within three years despite admitting past failures.

Mayor N H Farrell, opposed by Lin scheid, was re elected. clerk and treasurer races saw incumbents re elected amid partial returns. In Preston Ernest Eberhard Jr won mayor by 23 votes. Unofficial Blackfoot returns show former Mayor Merril C Boyle continuing.
William Joseph Lushinsky 85 died Tuesday afternoon at his son Her bert Lushinsky’s home 125 Roosevelt after a short illness. Born February 26 1864 in Posen Poland he came to the United States 70 years ago settling in Plattsmouth Nebraska later moving to Colorado Springs and finally Idaho. He married Pauline Mary Schubert January 13 1868 in Plattsmouth. Survived by four of six children Ralph Los Angeles Herbert Alameda Esther Overmyer Pueblo Pauline Ellis Colorado Springs. 15 grandchildren 17 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also survived by brother George Lushinsky Plattsmouth and sister Mrs Martha Desemer Lincoln. Friends may call at Arthur W Hall mortuary where body lies until taken to Colorado Springs for services and interment.
Mrs. Julia Wilson Dibble aged 68 died after a lingering illness in a local hospital. Born December 21, 1880 in Marion Iowa she moved to Idaho four years ago to live with her daughter Mrs. R C Hillman. Survived by three children and six grandchildren with brothers and sisters in Iowa and Wisconsin. Funeral services set for 2 pm Thursday at Arthur W Hall mortuary chapel officiated by Rev N R Simpson. friends may visit at Mrs Hillman’s home until then.

Voters in Pocatello chose W. W. Halsey, an engineer, as mayor with 11 percent edge over Grant L. Stowell. Dr. Ray J. Davis and A. Carmack won council seats as incumbents faced defeat. Davis led with 2 941 votes. Election day was lively but peaceful and new officials will be sworn in.
Bannock county commissioners set June 3 at 2 30 p m to open bids for a 153 bed hospital to be built between Halliday and Carter streets and Eleventh and Thirteenth avenues on the east bench. Architect Frank H Paradice Jr describes a monolithic reinforced concrete brick veneered building with three wings and six floors.
