Knudsen World War II production chief dies at 69
DETROIT William S. Knudsen former president of General Motors and wartime production coordinator for America's industrial effort died after a long illness at age 69. The Danish immigrant rose from shipyard worker to GM president before leading the U S rearmament drive for President Roosevelt. He was later promoted to lieutenant general, the only civilian to reach that rank. He is survived by his wife Clara and four children. Knudsen's heavy wartime labors, including a final tour on battlefronts, may have hastened his decline.
