Rear Admiral Carlo B. Brittain, chief of staff to Admiral Wilson, shot himself while on duty with the Atlantic fleet in Cuban waters. The body to be transported to the United States on the hospital ship Solace. Brittain, 53, from Richmond Kentucky, served in the Spanish American War and held commands including the battleships Massachusetts and Michigan. His son Ensign Thomas B. Brittain was serving aboard the North Dakota at the time.
