Rear Admiral Carlo B. Brittain chief of staff to Admiral Henry B. Wilson died by suicide while on duty with the Atlantic fleet in Cuban waters. The 53 year old Richmond Kentucky native served since 1888 and earned the Sampson medal for Santiago. His son Ensign Thomas B. Brittain was aboard the North Dakota at the time.
