Senator Borah of Idaho says his White House call was not to appeal to the president or justice department and denies rumors of indictments against many of his clients. He states he discussed nothing of such matters and plans to return home tonight.
United States attorney for Idaho N M Ruick to confer with Attorney General Bonaparte in Baltimore this afternoon to push Idaho federal court business and land fraud prosecutions. No indictments against Senator Borah had been reported at the time.
Norfolk Virginia reports a grand naval pageant as the Jamestown ter centenary begins April 26. The est fleet of American ships waits Hampton Roads to receive visiting warships from England Germany and Austria. The Atlantic fleet includes 25 battleships and cruisers awaiting the ceremonies.
J H Brady touts freight advantages benefiting Gate City and Twin Falls region. He cites better regional rates than Salt Lake Portland Butte and Boise, urging Pocatello to become southeastern Idaho's wholesale distributing point. A special Milner train with dining car aided turnout of local merchants and officials.
Chief McManus tells Tribune there was no change in police administration or saloon slot machines. Saloon owners were notified to follow the law and patrolmen Bradley Kelly and Myers are assigned to day and night shifts respectively. The report of wine rooms reopening is false and politically motivated.
Dr John Carver, said to have at least 17 wives, is under arrest at Fort Smith Arkansas for defrauding wives of about 150000 dollars. He is sought in Cincinnati Pittsburgh Buffalo Grand Rapids and Saginaw Michigan.
Fire in the Toulon arsenal began shortly after midnight and grew to threatening nearby homes. Vast quantities of stores burned, with losses in millions of francs. A storehouse wall collapsed, burying twenty men and injuring ten, while three may have been killed. Sailors and soldiers fought the flames overnight and casualties rose to thirty injured, with some sent to hospital. In New York, four men burned to death and 250 horses perished as fires scorched Broadway areas, with $200,000 in property loss and twelve firefighters injured.
The wooden lumber barge Arcadia sailing from Manistee April 11 toward Two Rivers is believed lost with eleven aboard including captain and owner Harry May and his wife and cook. Wreckage found along the beach is identified as cargo from the missing vessel.
The Interstate Commerce Commission on April 23 ruled that party rate tickets, once limited to theatrical companies, should be available to any group traveling together. This expands the eligibility for reduced fares to a wider public travel party.
Seattle reports a major fire destroyed the Fort Blakeley Mill, one of the world’s largest lumber mills, causing an estimated loss near half a million dollars. Fire struck early today in Seattle, Washington, damaging the plant and halting operations.
The Great North Side Tract opened under the Carey act at Milner drawing 500 registrants and over 1000 attendees from many states. Mareta Slaughter of Colorado Springs won first choice, with several Idaho residents among the top lots. A 180000 acre main tract opens now, 150000 more to be opened later across the Snake River, and plans for an electric line to Gooding were announced.
A federal grand jury in this city indicted Luther Bearskin, Bannock, on two counts of murder in the first degree for the December 10 1906 killings of Mrs. Ingateur and Frank Ramsey at the Ingateur ranch near Bannock Creek. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment and faces trial, with judges and lawyers named. witnesses included Mrs. Ingateur’s children. The case will be tried in the circuit court term, not the district term, and involves multiple Indian witnesses and an interpreter.
John Hessell a sheepherder was fatally shot by Evans Black at the Beekstead sheep camp seven miles north of Bancroft Idaho. Black surrendered claiming self defense after a long feud. Hessell was from High Point North Carolina. Coroner's jury seated and Black jailed in Idaho Falls.
The jury in a YMCA mock court found John Ontank not guilty in People vs Ontank over allegedly striking W P Havener with an air hose. Alibi witness Pat Sweeney testified Ontank was distant. evidentiary hose vanished, prompting a nolle prosequi motion but the case continued for the jury to hear arguments.
Chicago reports C. C. King president of the First National Bank of Scotland S D arrested on charges of misappropriating 45000 of bank funds. King denies the allegations as enemies’ work. Scotland SD April 23 Yankton to try the case. bank liabilities totaled 107000 with only 20 percent expected to be paid.
Volcanic activity continues in southern Chile with repeated eruptions. Valdavia remains buried under ashes and smoke, while Santiago reports ongoing tremors and atmospheric ash. Residents brace for further eruptions and potential hazard impacts.
The Tribune offers a complete baseball outfit to every boy in Pocatello who signs up a new paid-in-advance two month subscription. Each set includes a baseball, bat and cap and will be given once the outfits arrive. Boys urged to recruit fathers or uncles to subscribe and bring one dollar to receive the gear.
A March 16 letter from Salt Lake City authorizes limited reduced rail fare for Idaho Scholastic League attendees traveling to Pocatello for a meeting on April 26.
