U S ambassador J Leighton Stuart planned no escape from Nanking while communists pushed east toward Shanghai. The State Department said about 200 Americans were attached to the embassy and eighty seven remained in the capital.

Phillips pressed the city council to fix a definite removal date for a gravel pit and obstructions on East Center street. Wendell Marshall of College Heights development urged a firm council deadline while L E Reid defended his rock crusher operations on his own property. Utah’s traffic deaths climbed to 31 for the year with three more fatalities reported yesterday and today. The latest victim was Louis Batt aedt of Salt Lake City, who died from injuries in a two car crash last Wednesday.

Idaho farmers plan 152000 acres of potatoes this year versus a 139000 acre state goal. Ben Jansen says the 1949 price for No 1 and No 2 potatoes starts at 1.40 per hundredweight from July to October, with marketing charges about 0.65 leaving about 0.15 to growers. A surplus could pressure tighter regulations and a cut in parity prices to 60 cents or less.

McCammon resident Don A Baker is sought by the county sheriff for allegedly stealing 22 dollars from M Henson’s Lava Hot Springs store while the owner’s back was turned. Baker, about 23, 175 pounds, 6 feet 1 inch, wore an army style shirt and light brown trousers.

Utah Men Hit Jackpot But Land in Jail

Two Utah men were arrested in Downey for robbing a 50-cent slot machine by drilling a hole and using a wire to trigger the jackpot. Wayne J. Hilbert 27 from Salt Lake City and M. L. Broadwater 48, a Salt Lake truckman, are in county jail. They face robbery charges and will be heard in Downey before possible bail or return to Bannock county for trial.

Legion Continues Carnival Tonight

The American Legion post No. 4 sponsors the Gay Nineties carnival for a second night at 7:30 in the Legion club. Ben Bailey chairs the event which drew a large crowd for bodths and dancing. The carnival runs until midnight. A parade closes the three day run Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. carnival. Guests are asked to wear western attire.

Road Studies Under Way In Plant Area

High School Musicians Arrive for Idaho Festival

The fifth district music festival opens on the Idaho State college campus with 178 vocal and instrumental soloists and 35 ensembles competing for ratings. About 1,400 musicians from 18 southern Idaho towns are expected to attend by Saturday. Masons Schedule Sixth District Meet for Tonight
